I'd like to start a debate about whether Shades of God by Paradise Lost really counts as death-doom metal. I saw some posts mentioning in this in the thread on the band but they didn't go any further.

While this album has somewhat harsh vocals, I don't get much of an actual death metal vibe from them. The first two and most recent two use much more traditional growling and I don't find that Shades of God fits in with Lost Paradise, Gothic or Medusa. This one is more of a stepping stone between the early death-doom and the gothic metal played on Icon.

I haven't heard it in a while. So you'd suggest moving it to gothic?

I'm sure Adam will have an opinion on this as he's been well into PL lately. I'll have another listen myself.

No, to the main Doom Metal sub-genre.

Ashley mentioned this before in the Paradise Lost thread. I do tend to agree on this. Doom Metal would fit better than Death-Doom Metal. RYM has both but there's some funny business going on with Paradise Lost's tags there since there's a good chunk of users who won't accept Medusa as death-doom, while hardly anyone contests it on Shades.

I get a slight and kinda underdeveloped death-doom vibe from it but yes, I could see the main doom sub being the better fit.

For what it’s worth I too agree. Can someone now actually change it please? πŸ™„πŸ˜

On a related matter, I'm also of the view that Believe in Nothing fits Alternative Metal better over Gothic Metal.

Out of their discography I mostly listen to the doom releases. I know the gothic ones semi-well but they do have that slump period after Draconian Times where they seemed to be aiming at more commercial territory. I count Believe in Nothing as part of that. I've heard it, found it well below sub par, and now don't remember a thing about what it sounded like. I don't recall it standing out as wildly different from their usual gothic work but I could be wrong.

That's one of three that I haven't picked up yet. I streamed it once and from my recollection of it I'd say maybe. I'd need to listen again. I didn't find it as good on first listen but they've become one of my favourite bands, so the completionist in me wants it. The only one I'm not so fussed about ever having is Host.

I could be sold on Faith Divides Us Death Unites Us being doom enough by the way The albums either side of it strike me as decidedly more gothic.

I'm happy how it stands personally. Believe in Nothing is I think an either or situation. Same could be said of Faith Divides Us and arguably also Tragic Idol. I'd probably leave both as gothic though. That way the tags chart their progression back to the death-doom of Medusa. The Plague Within was their most doom album for years before last year.
