I can add Overkill's 'The Grinding Wheel' to my list now...hell of an album!

I'm impressed too. M took a bit of time to grow on me, but I like this one a lot right away.

Good first impressions here, even RYM seems to like this one.
I feel like her dark folk side is more prominent here so it's actually even less of a pure metal album than M was, but it works for me. There are some stronger doom metal elements too, especially in the track Funeral which features Chelsea Wolfe.

I have got to keep up more with Symphonic metal.
I just found out about two very cool bands. Scardust, from Israel, released a full-length album in August (mp3 only ) and their couple of videos from their 2015 ep on youtube, they sound excellent, and not your typical symphonic metal. Then I discovered a band out of Boston called Seven Spires, they also released an album in August. The gal singing has a killer set of pipes, and they also have a quite unusual sound to them, based on the couple of videos I've watched. Both bands aren't weird by any means, but they do go above and beyond the typical Nightwish-type style you hear from so many symphonic metal bands with female singers. He's not left Avatarium. It's probably just a badly worded sticker.

I have a question regarding Soen & Avatarium.
I just picked up the newest Soen cd, and there was a sticker on it saying 'ex-members of Opeth, Amon Amarth, and Avatarium'. Now, I know that Martin Lopez played in both Opeth and Amon Amarth. Marcus Jidell is the guy from Avatarium...is he now an "ex-member" of Avatarium?!?! I certainly hope not.

2017 albums I've enjoyed so far are:
Immolation - Atonement Iced Earth - Incorruptible and that's about it! I really can't think of anyone else, either because I haven't checked out that many 2017 releases or I just have an incredibly bad memory. |

Stormspell Records was nice enough to send me digital sneak peeks of their Fall 2017 releases, so I've got a bunch of new stuff to plow thru for my blog:
Blazon Stone - Down in the Dark Fire Strike - Slaves of Fate Numenor - Chronicles Yuri Fulone - Your Kingdom Will Fall Stereo Nasty - Twisting the Blade Palantir - Lost Between Dimensions

Immolation - Atonement (pretty good but too hooky for Immolation)
Fen - Winter (listened a little bit, not ready to form an opinion) Dying Fetus - Wrong One to Fuck With (good shit, kicks ass) Cormorant - Diaspora (again, not ready to form an opinion but I love what these guys did in the past) Cloak of Altering - I Reached For The Light That Drowned In Your Mouth (great) That's it when it comes to metal, I listen to a lot of non-metal stuff lately, hence the laughable list. EDIT: Ah, I forgot about Elder - Reflections of a Floating World! Awesome stoner doom with a prog edge to it, recommended. EDIT2: Ah, and Pallbearer - Heartless. Pretty good, not crazy about it. EDIT3: Ah, and of course the new Mastodon - Waste of Time. Yeah, a waste of time. EDIT4: Fuck me if I didn't listen to the new Havok album - Conformicide. Preatty kick ass thrash metal album, but when it comes to the new wave thrash, Vektor still rules.

I am really enjoying the new Accept disc... I think it may be their best since Blood Of The Nations.

How is the new Wintersun?
None of my local or mall record stores had the cd today, so I had to order it online, should be here next week sometime.

Off the top of my head I think the only 2017 releases I've heard have been Overkill and Body Count. (I like them both just fine, for whatever that's worth.)
I will have to look closer at the other bands/albums mentioned in this thread to see what else is out there that might be up my alley... Edited by keefer1970 - 19 Jul 2017 at 12:04pm |
