Black metal sub-genre poll number 2: Depressive black metal.

Not a genre that has really appealed to me too much so I only know two of the current top 12, my vote going to Todesstoß. Only other one I've heard here is Gris - Il Était une Forêt...

Not sure there's too much love around here for this genre in general either looking at the amount of ratings some of this top 12 have, but regardless here is the poll.

Since I've only heard one I'll sit this out for a while. A few of these are on my check-out list though. I may even look into a few of them today.

I took a listen to Shining's V: Halmstad. That one's pretty good.

Now listening to the Leviathan album. Not enjoying the vocals here to be honest. Some of the music is okay.

Of the few I've heard I'll go with V: Halmstad.

I may have heard some of the ones Nicole has if I was home when she was listening to them (I've definitely heard a bit of that Todesstoß one). I don't think any of these would be albums I'd listen to by choice though.

^ I was surprised by the Todesstoß album. I even gave it five stars. It's not something I could listen to regularly but when the mood strikes I really like it.

You can never listen to too much black metal.

I sometimes wished I liked it more, especially since Nicole loves it, but most of the time it does little for me. Atmospheric and melodic bands tend to click with me more often.

This genre though, depressive, I just don't see the point in. It seems that the whole thing exists just for everyone to have a whinge about how hard they've got it.

I think there's a bit more too it than that and that it can explore dark topics in general.

It's not usually the subject matter that will put me off a DSBM band so I don't really care about lyrics too much but the vocals themselves. They can often be over the top and annoying.

Yeah maybe, but exploring dark topics could be said of many metal genres in general, including black.
