This news left me shocked and speechless, did not even know he'd been battling cancer the last year and a half or so.

I'm listening to his new album right know and it's an amazing piece of work. Such a huge loss.

Didn´t know he had cancer either. Great loss for the World of music (and his Family too of course). I´ve yet to go through his full disco, so I mostly know his earliest releases and the radio "hits".

This was unexpected unlike Lemmy. The man has left behind a wealth of music and the new album is getting rave reviews so it has become a priority and what a wonderful way to end it all

Rest in peace. Not too familiar with his work, but I do really like "The Man Who Sold the World".

R.I.P. I can't say I know much about his music, but I always enjoyed it when I did hear it.

Wasn't a huge fan, but he did seem to rub off on me a bit. Love some of the weird old stuff like Starman and Space Oddity, and Jareth in Labyrinth. I remember the controversy around Let's Dance and China Girl. My little bro has all his albums, including the later stuff no one else has heard of. A big loss.

^ what's weird about Starman or Space Oddity?

what controversy was there around Let's Dance and China Girl? I do not know.

When you put Starman and Space Oddity against pop music of their time it's a bit left field.

The controversy for the other two was over their videos:

Let's Dance was criticised because of the way it portrayed Australian Aborigines. However, I've heard it said some Aboriginal leaders were quite happy because Bowie actually acknowledged their existence, which is more than a lot of white Australians do. Judge for yourself

China Girl was controversial because of the nudie sexy bit at the end rolling around in the surf. The model was a Chinese NZer by the name of Geeling Ng. She later starred in a stupid soap opera.

For the time when they appeared, they were not that odd, in the 70s, some progressive and experimental music were sneaking into the mainstream charts. So not just pop music.

Yeah, but Bowie was more successful and more widely heard than most prog music and the like back then.

that's true, but what I was trying to say is that it's no surprise to me that songs like Space Oddity and Starman were hits back then.
