I always find it interesting when a band drastically changes their sound after their first album, sometimes they can be for the better and sometimes for the worse. What are some examples of drastic sound changes from bands you can think of?

Here's some notable ones for me:

The disowned debut of Slipknot, back before they decided to hire a more radio-friendly vocalist.

And the oddity in the Scorpions discography.

Shining (Norway) went from a free-jazz group to avant-garde metal

Just some a few I know of:

Forest Silence changed from a dark ambient band to a black metal band, albeit it an atmospheric one, so it's not like they totally changed their sound.

Not a band I've listened to, but Satan's Host started as heavy/us power metal then changed to black/death metal (and later back to power metal).

Cruachan have always been folk metal but their debut is a quite raw black metal take on it. They later got a female singer and almost completely dropped the black metal elements for a couple of albums, but gradually brought them back, although in a much more polished way.

Pyogenesis- Death metal > Alt rock > pop punk.

Shihad (NZ band also known as Pacifier) Thrash metal > Industrial Metal > Alt. Rock > Emo > Alt. Rock. They've been the biggest band in NZ for quite some years.

Wow, those are certainly quite the drastic changes.

I take Shihad wasn't as big before they went alt. rock? Tongue

Shihad has pretty much been the biggest band of whatever genre they've played since about 1990. They were the biggest metal band, then the biggest band on the alternative circuit (I'm talking proper alternative, not the shit that all sounds like Pearl Jam), and since about 1995, basically the biggest rock band in NZ. Wish I could find my review of Devolve. I suppose I'll have to write another one.

Off the top of my head (and trying to not include bands already mentioned).

In Flames
Behemoth
Mastodon
Soilwork (maybe?)
Job For A Cowboy (well, Deathcore to Death Metal might not be considered drastic)

Kreator - Endorama - it's their soft album, I like it a lot though.

Paradise Lost - Host - barely recognizable. Got bad reviews when it came out, I was curious, how bad can it be? Well, not bad at all for me, I loved it. LOL

Annihilator went industrial with Remains (1996) - not bad at all; but then they did a little bit of metalcore with All For You, their worst album if you ask me.

Host is obviously the big one for Paradise Lost changing, but they've changed quite a few times and knowing them could do so again yet.

^ I am one of the few that dislike their back to the roots sound from the last two albums.

Now I go hide... LOL

Shotgun Messiah started out as a snotty glam band ala Poison, went sorta Skid Row-ish style metal (think Slave to the Grind) on their second album, and by their third they were full on industrial metal ala Ministry.

Dokken tried to go grunge for one album (1997's Shadowlife), which turned out to be a huge mistake.

I wouldn't call it a mistake though and it's not that grunge IMO. The vocals and the solos are not grungy (I'm inventing words, I know LOL). I actually like the album quite a bit.

I like it too, but I would say we're in the minority. :D

Dark Moor... And what a horrendous change, even a downfall that is... They sound like garbage in their last couple of albums.

It's not really a huge jump, but Starkill went from almost no clean vocals to a little clean vocals to a LOT of clean vocals and then finally to almost all female symphonic vocals. Each of their albums is a bit different from the last. Oh yeah and I fucking love them!
