Running Wild have recently become one of my personal favourite bands. When I first heard them I didn't actually like them too much, but they grew on me a lot and as far as the German power metal scene goes, I think these guys are second only to Blind Guardian. I don't think their more recent albums are all that special, though I'm quite hopeful for the future as I found out this week that they recently brought in a full-time full band line-up again for the first time in years. But the first ten albums are an incredible run of high quality work IMO. Hopefully this thread brings the band some well deserved attention.

Their early work is speed/heavy metal which later turned to power/heavy metal in the late 80's and then towards more of a straight heavy metal sound by 2000.

My personal favourite of the band is their eighth album Black Hand Inn, closely followed by Port Royal and Death or Glory.

Here is a selection of songs from the band.

I´ve only heard Gates to Purgatory which I really like, but I mean to check out the rest of their disco in time. But I say that about any artist I think is interesting, so let´s see what happens LOL.

Under Jolly Roger, cos that's the only song I actually know... I know I've got a couple of others, but it's the only one that sticks.

Haven't actually heard them yet, I've been meaning to check them out for a while now. I'll probably start listening once I get back from vacation.

I know what you mean; just too many bands to give them all the same level of attention right? I highly recommend Running Wild though. Well, up until The Rivalry at least.

I actually think that Victory is still a pretty good album, though the start of their decline for sure. None of the ones after that are outright terrible IMO, simply less remarkable. Rogues en Vogue is more let down by its production than anything though.

I don't know much of their stuff at all to be honest so I'll pass on a vote. I'll have to check out more of their stuff soon.

Torn between Port Royal and Death or Glory. I'll give it to Port Royal as this was my first Running Wild album (after listening to Under Jolly Roger).

Running Wild is one of those bands that should become a priority to look into, they have an incredible discography with tons of fantastic songs, real timeless classics with spine-shivering melodies. I'll say it again, they have an Iron Maiden-level and number of godly songs. I dare anyone to listen to the song Blazon Stone and not admit it's a damn masterpiece.

They are definitely among the 3 best and most classic german power metal bands. Right next to Helloween(/Gamma Ray aka Kai Hansen) and Blind Guardian (Rage completes the big 4 of German power I would think).

Don't forget to listen to their epics, Rock n' Rolf was great composing long songs.

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks this. They deserve more attention around here for sure.

Second for me, after Blind Guardian. I still need to properly tackle getting into Rage. Heard a couple of albums and haven't exactly been blown away, but it was the same story with Running Wild for me.

I've heard around half of their albums now, but I still can't say too much about them, because most of those have only received one listen so far. I do like their early stuff a lot for sure, though, and even their last two are somewhat enjoyable. The Brotherhood and Rogues en Vogue were horrible on first listen, but I was expecting them to be. Out of what I've heard, I'd say my favorite so far is a three way contest between Port Royal, Death or Glory and Black Hand Inn, with the first of those probably in front, though it has an unfair advantage in that I've heard it three times already.

Been really getting into Running Wild lately, and I've so far heard their first four. Right now Under Jolly Roger is easily my favorite, but I've still got many albums to go.

When you tackle their discography you can give a pass to anything released after The Rivalry. That's the last truly good Running Wild album.

Voted Under Jolly Roger, although Pile of Skulls is a very close second. They were so consistent that it's hard to pick one favorite.

I voted for Black Hand Inn, though Port Royal and Death or Glory are pretty close behind. I actually like Victory and their last two albums quite a bit. The Brotherhood and Rogues en Vogue are their only real bad ones, imo.
