So what are your thoughts on digital-only releases?

I've never liked them, if I'm going to buy an album I prefer to have a physical copy that I can hold in my hand.

Not a fan of them, but I understand that some artists simply can't afford to release them, which I think is incredibly sad. My collection is my pride and joy and not being able to add something I really love to it is really disappointing. Fortunately I haven't had many releases like that, mostly stuff that's free to download. I'd happily pay for it on CD.

Digital is fine if its free, otherwise I prefer something physical. I often use streaming sites though. My wallet is limited so I only usually buy the stuff that's really impressed me, unless something is cheap.

I agree that digital-only is fine if free, you can't argue with something that's free. Unfortunately, my wallet is limited as well, so I use a lot of streaming as well.

Streaming is great, but ads on Spotify every two or three songs gets on my nerves after a while.

^Unfortunately Adblock won't work for Spotify, so I use YT and Grooveshark most of the time.

I've been out of shelf space for ages, so anything I don't want on vinyl really badly I will typically buy digital nowadays

Actually I've just found today that it does work, but you have to use the web player (which I had forgotten was there as it was messing around when I first started using Spotify).

This is going to become a problem for me before long. I have one more shelf to fill before I'm out of room. Guess my DVD's will be put out of sight somewhere after that.

My wife won't let me buy anything else so I either have to go download or sneak stuff into the house. My CD collection is consigned to crates, bar a CD stand that's full. I've about 2500 (plus a pile of cassettes although I sold all my vinyl in a fit of madness) which sounds a lot but I've been on this earth much longer than most of you whipper-snappers Big smile

This is a problem for me too, I have most of my CD's sitting on top of my bookshelf or in a few plastic CD shelves I have. I have my vinyls in another bookshelf, and my cassettes scattered around. I've also been running out of shelf space for video games. I've been thinking of building some wooden shelves sometime soon.

for me:
a cd tower
2 shelves on a bookshelf
as many as will fit in the center console of my car
several stacks on the floor or on my desk, at any particular time

+ one smallish stand for my record player, built-in cabinet completely full of LPs

I love digital releases. The look of fresh, unopened cover.jpg file and the sound of booklet.pdf opening in adobe reader. Ah, that's some premium shit.

These are probably the best words I've seen in a long time. LOL

Games are the one thing I've surrendered to digital on. So much better prices if you wait for Steam sales or bundle sites to have them. I have a few boxed games still but I'm slowly replacing them when they come up on sale.

I have as well as far as PC goes. I do pick up physical PC games if I find them at a thrift store for cheap, but otherwise I mostly buy from Steam. However, for my PS1/PS2 collection, I really need some more space.

The trouble is with buying PC games 2nd hand is that a lot of newer stuff needs to be activated on Steam (or Origin etc) anyway, which means its useless afterwards for resale. I've actually seen several recent boxed games in a local charity shop recently, which I might have taken a punt on, but seeing Steam on the box makes them pointless to even try and resell. I've actually told the people that work there before that Steam activated games can't be resold but they never listen.

I still have quite a few PS1 and Gamecube games though. They're on a CD/DVD rack in my wardrobe with all the free compilation CDs I accumulated when I was buying Metal Hammer. I've sold quite a few of my older games recently though, including all my Mega Drive stuff, since I just didn't play them anymore. Funny thing, I got my Mega Drive towards the end of its generation for about £50, and that's also about what it sold for on ebay a couple of months ago (and here was I thinking I'd be lucky to get £10 out of it).

Don't like them - in fact i pretty much ignore them. i want to listen to a hard copy on my Hi-fi for best sound quality possible. I might listen to something online to see if it's worth buying but never buy digital downloads so if something is released only this way I'm probably not going to hear it.

Even if I'm not that old (37 this summer), I stick to the CD/LP/MC formats.
I can understand the use of the digital format for the release of some self-released material, but I'm still reluctant to the idea of paying for some mp3 (or Wave files, FLAC files, etc...)

And if we're talking about Digital-only releases... I still think having some "physical" objects in some record stores help bands and artists to get noted by the public (especially if you have a nice artwork on your material).
