Just got my Mindmaze promo, though have just literally stuck this one on, so I'll finish it first:

Again. I think I'd still give this power primary on RYM, but to me this feels as if their prog side is in control now.
Which is actually what I've wanted to hear from them since their debut and the results are every bit as good as expected. Draft rating 4.5 since I hardly ever go straight to 5 stars these days, but this notgetting a top tier score is very unlikely.

Four tracks in, and this already sounds like prog done the way it should be: Huge instrumental sections, but without sacrificing songwriting quality, and a wide range of stuff going on, instead of just being at the same pace pretty much the whole album like the Pyramaze album mostly was, and like many modern prog albums.

Yes if all newer prog sounded like this I probably wouldn't have got so burned out on it the way that I did.
What do you think about actually placing this one in prog here?

I'm still listening to it now, but I think that might be the best way to tag it, yeah. It would certainly make the band page interesting, because each of their three albums would be tagged differently, yet I think even that wouldn't be a problem because it would just show how their sound has evolved over time. So far I think this may be their best yet, though I loved the first two albums as well.

I definitely think its their best yet even after just two listens. Mindmaze are an odd one because I should technically love them best when they're playing power metal, but I've felt as early as the debut that their real strength is in prog and I think this release proves it.
For my money, it's the best of the three Inner Wound releases coming out on April 28th.

I really liked their first album, but wasn't as impressed by their second album. I haven't listened to either album in a while though, so maybe I should re-visit them.

Yeah, I think they're very good at more straight-forward tracks, but they seem to be at their absolute best when Jeff lets loose and gets a bit more adventurous with his guitar playing and songwriting, because I think he's a spectacular musician.

Damn it with the way I'm been feeling about prog lately who'd have thought that my 2017 list was going to have prog albums at number 1 and 2 by this point? And we're still Ayreon to come this year.
The dilemma is, which way around do I put them?
Vandroya is also potentially this year's first five for albums we've got tagged as power metal. It's a 4.5 at minimum. Pyramaze grew on me a bit with a second listen but that album has the misfortune of coming out the same time as these two: Vandroya destroys it on the power metal front and Mindmaze destroys it on the progressive metal front.
I expect I'll review the three in the order the promos came, saving the best for last.
