This album feels a bit too "safe" to my ears, but I'm still super excited to see these guys live tomorrow night in Philly! Anyone else going to be there by any chance?

I tend to agree, the structure of the tracks, the two epics bookending the shorter tracks, is pretty typical for them, as is having a ballad entirely sung by Neal. There are no surprises at all. I still think it's a pretty high quality release, although something of a step-down from The Whirlwind and maybe even their weakest overall. It does open up to me a bit more with each listen though. I actually had a review fully written then my most recent listen to the album made me doubt whether I still agreed with what I wrote. I don't think it's ever going to work it's way up to 5 star regard, but where it falls between 4 - 4.5 stars I'm still trying to decide.

Hope you enjoy the gig, I saw them on The Whirld Tour (the show that the DVD is of, as it goes), brilliant night!

It's growing on me a little bit too, but I have a very tough time getting into the ballad tracks... and the epics just don't feel as memorable as Duel With the Devil or Stranger in Your Soul to my ears. Still a very good album, though. Smile This will actually be my fourth time seeing TA (saw the Whirld tour as well, and two "reunion" gigs -- one at a progfest in 2008 and one as part of the Neal Morse/Flower Kings tour last year), and I'm as excited as ever!

...and nice choice on the Corpsessed, by the way. Very dark and grimy death metal!

Yeah that's pretty much how I feel about it, especially in regard to the epics. Although I do quite like Shine. Beyond the Sun not so much. I feel the same about Bridge Across Forever's title track, as well as Heaven in Your Heart from Neal's Solo Scriptura album.

I wasn't that impressed by the Corpsessed album though, based on first impressions anyway. Decent enough for a casual listen I guess but there was nothing about it that really roped me in and held my attention.

...so for anyone that cares, the Transatlantic gig was GREAT and I highly recommend catching them live if they're playing a venue near you. I was also able to get a picture with the band after the show... that's me in the Steven Wilson shirt and my dad standing to the left. Smile
