I went with GnR, Extreme, Van Halen, Skid Row, Quiet Riot and Krokus.

I'm not that much into glam metal, but Van Halen and Extreme display some really impressive guitar work, and I like four songs on Skid Row's "Slave to the Grind"; I've heard a couple of QR and Krokus albums, which I liked and I really like "Appetite for Destruction" and about 50% of the songs on the two "Illusion" albums(I just don't like Axl's vocals and his lyrics). I could have gone with Ratt as well, since they made a couple of songs that I think are quite good.

Skid Row kick ass.

I wouldn't consider VH, Krokus, The Cult or Kingdom Come as Glam, tho...

The Sweet shoulda been in there - the original Glam Metal band, and possibly the first band to play true metal ("Set Me Free", "Blockbuster", "Action", "Hellraiser", "Medusa" and so on).

There's a lot of bands there I like but i went for 3 - Ratt, Van Halen and Badlands. Wouldn't really call Badlands glam metal though - more like 70's infused hard rock with metal elements.

Extreme, no doubt. Pornograffitti and III Sides To Every Story are some of my favorite glam albums! Clap

Mr Big
Van Halen
WASP
Kingdom Come

I'm running out of love for the glam/hair/metal genre, but I'll always love these 4 bands.

Winger made a few good albums, especially Pull and IV, but then again their amazing guitarist Reb Beach is the main reason I listen to them.

Post 2004 Europe is amazing to me, I wouldn't call them glam metal though (for the new sound that is), Secret Society is one of my favourite albums.

if not glam metal... then what? When they are considered to be in the L.A. wave of bands as Motley Crue, RATT and others.

I understand - while they had the Glam image, and the geographical credentials, their attitude was somewhat extreme.

I'm not really familiar enough with their music (which is where it counts!), but I would tend to agree, from the little I've heard, that the similarities between them and Cinderella are slight.

The comparison is somewhat extreme, however - I think there may be similarities between them and Motley Crue?

It's a bit like saying that Def Leppard and Venom can't possibly both be NWoBHM bands because they're so different in sound and attitude (and that's a far more extreme comparison!).

One of the oddities on that list, to me, is Skid Row, who didn't have a Glam image OR sound - that sound is pure Southern Boogie with attitude - and weren't Krokus from Swizerland, not L.A.?

As Micky points out, it's fine to disagree, but what's the solution?

My friend WASP was a "glam" band only in image. When we call a band "glam band" we mean that beyond image this band plays like glam band (sort songs, rock'n'roll riffs etc.). WASP are a classic 80's metal band with very heavy sound and strong melodies and sometimes with a power metal and progressive touch (listen to the "Crimson Idol" album). I can imagine WASP playing together with bands like Iron Maiden or Judas Priest but never with bands like Poison.

for many...  I suppose myself as well...  image went a long way into making a band glam. There has never seemed to me to be a particular glam metal 'sound' other than perhaps being a bit upbeat and ..hmm..  poppy??  But I suppose I myself see glam beginning and ending with metal.. that is more concerned with image..and hair!!! hahah... than music.  That fits a particular era and time and place .. KISS was the little swimmies... and LA  the womb..naturally... flakes that they are haha. Together I suppose they gave birth to glam.. hair metal.

Um... that's actually more or less what I meant when I said "while they had the Glam image, and the geographical credentials, their attitude was somewhat extreme".

The thing with the list given in this thread is that it mainly concentrates on image, and that is why I singled out Skid Row, who had neither the Glam image or sound, and Krokus, who started out almost as a Prog band then started sounding more like AC/DC than AC/DC. Although I understand they wore eye liner.

Everyone has their own definitions of various musical groupings (I shudder at the word "genre"), and now I look at the list, I'm wondering why Van Halen would appear in there - or Guns 'n' Roses, or The Cult, or Kingdom Come...

To be more accurate about the sound/definition of Glam, it should, by rights, sound more rock n roll, like Gary Glitter or T Rex than the atrocious ballads of bands like Cinderella, or the overblown blues of G'n'R  - and Glam is inseparable from the image - that's more than 50% of it - so I'd be more willing to accept W.A.S.P. as Glam than Skid Row or Van Halen.

If you dig through the NWoBHM bands and hard rock bands of the late 1970s / early 1980s, there's little to distinguish the music from Glam bands - particularly The Sweet and Slade, who were a massive influence on Quiet Riot. Both of those bands were far more hard rock or even early heavy metal than Glam.

On the Flip side, 1970s band The Heavy Metal Kids were far more Glam than heavy metal, and they were an inspiration on AC/DC, whose first singer was a confirmed Glam head.

In short, musically there's very little to distinguish Glam from most early Heavy Metal.

Which of these two is more metal than glam?

...OK, having re-listened to that Motley Crue track, I can understand why someone might think that Skid Row played the same music - it's not that different (but then neither is the W.A.S.P. track, except it's a bit wimpier than the Crue song).

In 1987, "Heavy Metal" was the music in the above videos, and "Thrash Metal" was Metallica et al - simple division, based on the mechanical attributes (thrashing is a technique that anyone can positively identify).

As Micky rightly says, it's all Heavy Metal.

I almost completely agree with what you say. But finally I can say only this: some metal fans simply use the term glam metal just to "bury" some very good hard rock bands. To be precise I don't like the term "glam metal" at all i prefer the term "commercial hard rock" or "80s hard rock" to describe this kind of metal. It is very eazy to criticize the make-up of Poison but what all these heavy guys have to say about the tons of make-up used by the black metal bands?

P.S.: Well the last question is out of topic but nevermind...Tongue
P.S. 2: How a progressive metal fan like me became a defender of glam metal? I think deep inside in me a poser is hiding...Embarrassed
P.S.: Van Halen a glam metal band? Zeus will burn us alive!

I'd have to choose between GnR and Skid Row. And I think I'd go for Skid Row because I'm way too biased about Bach. Yes, I don't even care about the band after Bach but there's something about 18 and Life, Quicksand Jesus, Youth Gone Wild. Not to forget Dave Sabo!

Would agree with every word! Hard Rock is what I thought it was till I came across Dave Mustaine's famous quote on "GLAM"....

I also like Extreme, Dokken, Great White, Kiss, Skid Row, Ratt, GnR, Motley Crue and Krokus out of that long list. I wouldn't call Krokus glam metal, but nevermind that, they have some great music, maybe I should listen to what I liked from them.

Someone mentioned Cinderella, I love them, their first two albums are great.
Motley Crue - only their 80s albums I enjoy
Extreme - their III Sides... album is great
Skid Row - obviously Slave to the Grind
Kiss - most of their albums are uneven, but they do have some great songs.
GnR - Appetite... is great, the Illusions albums are uneven, there's a lot of filler there.

WASP, GnR, and Skid Row. Would have voted for Steel Panther if they'd been on the list....
