Studio Ghibli #10:
![]() Not at all fantasy as the cover would suggest. A movie I sometimes feel I shouldn't like as much as I do considering it's a teen romantic drama. And yet it is brilliant. This was the only movie directed by Yoshifumi Kondo for Studio Ghibli and indeed his only feature length release. He died just three years after this came out. A real tragic waste of talent.

Studio Ghibli #11:
![]() Halfway through the 22 movie marathon and so far I've managed to rigorously stick to it without taking a break to watch other movies. This one is certainly among the studio's best of a highly consistent output.

Studio Ghibli #12:
![]() An oddball in the Ghibli collection and the first to switch of their usual animation style. It's a quirky and entertaining movie, but not among my Ghibli favourites.

![]() Amazing movie. Third time on this one for me and it's still just as good as the first time around.

Studio Ghibli #14:
![]() From one of their best to one of their weakest, that's about the best way to sum up The Cat Returns. It's not a bad movie, but it is skippable.

![]() Fascinating doco about the people behind Midway games. This is about the rise, from the amalgamation of Williams and Bally, to the fall, when consoles finally destroyed coin-op video games in the late 90s/early 2000s. It shows how some amazing and controversial games were created, like Smash TV and Mortal Kombat, but doesn't pull back in talking about the company's flops and eventual demise.

![]() Finally got around to watching this. Not what I expected. All the setting and costuming was excellent, the acting pretty good - lots of screaming - but the story was just a bit... meh. Still, I have seen it now. And Cathedral's music video makes it seem more interesting than it actually is.

Studio Ghibli #16: ![]() Surely the most skippable Ghibli movie. It failed to really hold my attention at all on the re-watch and has proved quite a stumbling block in this movie marathon (where I'm not watching any other movies between them - longest I've gone without watching a film I've not seen before for several years).

I see you mentioned some of their movies being rated lower than they should be (as far as intended audience age goes.) Well, the only one of their movies I've seen is Princess Mononoke, which I remember being very sad and fairly violent, yet..... I saw it when I was around 10-12, I think (I was definitely really young at the time.) Shockingly I loved it even back then, and never had any issues with it whatsoever. I highly doubt I was in that movie's intended audience at the time, though

Studio Ghibli #17:
![]() For me on the bottom rung of Miyazaki's incredible filmography, but still very good. Much more overtly a kid's movie that many of the Ghibli's, but still enjoyable for all.

I think I would have put Princess Mononoke at least at a 12 rating on our system. Bearing in mind of course that I grew up with extremely strict parents when it came to what I was allowed to watch, so that may have some bearing on what I would grade a movie in terms of suitability. I seemed to basically be the only kid in my school who wasn't allowed to watch 18 rated movies already and boy did I get a lot of stick about that from everyone. I know that in Australia (who do seem to be much stricter) Princess Mononoke is rated M which is a bit like something between our 12 and 15. Personally I don't consider it strictly a kid's movie and would include most of the Ghibli's in that belief. It's Grave of the Fireflies that is the biggie though. It's already the highest rated Ghibli here with a 12 certificate and I know damn well I would never have been allowed to watch that at 12. But as I said, strict parents. But it is an incredible sad film (and a war film at that) and it emotionally wrecked me even on the re-watch the other day. It is easily Ghibli's most truly adult film. Then you get Porco Rosso and it's mention of porn. Line doesn't exist in the dub but it's still there in the subs for the Japanese. Big no-no for me if kids are going to be watching.

James Bond Vs James T Kirk #... who cares? I just wanted to watch a Bond film!
![]() Roger Moore's second Bond film, and he's now made the part his own. He'll never be as cool as Connery, but Moore has an air of carefree aloofness panache that Connery never did. Christopher Lee makes a great bad guy as Scaramanga. Hervé Villechaize as Nick Nack is both sinister and comic as Scaramanga's right had man. Maude Adams and Britt Ekland both fall out of their clothes. Clifton James makes a reappearance as Sheriff J.W. Pepper, for some extra laughs. And the corkscrew car jump... immortal! |

Studio Ghibli #18:
![]() An adaptation of The Borrowers, this isn't top tier Ghibli and like Ponyo feels much more for the kids (possibly a sign of the times that the more modern Ghibli's seem to adhere more to western standards on content). I used to love The Borrowers as a kid but I don't remember much about that film now to say how this really compares.
