I enjoyed this a little more but I'd still say it's not a great movie by any stretch of the imagination. It's also made in that same plodding along way as Solaris. Might be better drama if in English to be honest. These are the first times subtitled movies have made me wish that. I normally don't notice once a movie gets me engrossed within it. These just left me wondering why I wasn't just reading a book. #8 movie of all time on RYM? Fuck no. And considering that this was a movie I'd been excited to see for a long time now, I'm bitterly disappointed by it.

Is this plodding pace and little plot a Russian thing? Or just this director? I don't think I'm going to touch any of this man's work ever again after these two.

Dragging up an old post here. It's been nearly a year since I watched this movie that I didn't like.

So why the hell am I still thinking about it at least every other week?

When I watched it last year, the quality was rather shit.

Picture looked more like this, but not even in HD (these images won't hotlink, sorry):

The same shot on the Criterion release looks like this:

Shocking difference IMO.

I don't care for slow films in general. Some just click, most just bore. This was one of the latter when I watched it last year. And the crap picture meant I wasn't even appreciating the long take shots and was overall definitely a distraction in hindsight.

So, to those here who like the movie (I think someone even said it was their favourite movie), do you honestly think that, if I were to buy the Criterion blu-ray, that an improved picture would change my mind? Or will it be a case of boring me once, will bore me again?

Loved this cartoon. I'd heard John Kricfalusi was a bit of a psycho, but never realised quite how fucked in the head he actually is. This is equal parts fascinating and horrifying.

Be warned if you watch this you might never want to watch the cartoon again.

"light on explanation" is a good thing though

This was surprisingly decent for a film so many seem to be talking total trash about. A slow burn, and a bit light on explanation, but really quite solid.

This was really good. Basically a crime film interlaced with fantasy and horror elements, and being a Mexican production feels right out of the school of classic Del Toro.

For a movie called How It Ends, the end is quite... open ended! Loved Forest Whitaker as a badass ex-marine. I thought this was going to be a bit crap when it started, but it got better and better.

IO I can't remember shit about other than Anthony Mackie was in it. Kept wondering why the guy who could land blockbuster roles like Marvel's Falcon was in such tripe.

It had a really good premise, but was just a bit too slow, and went for a brooding, moody feel, and missed. The Quiet Earth is a far better movie of this oeuvre (my pretentious wanky word for the day!).

I can recommend the Australien movie "These Final Hours" if you enjoy "end of the world" type films.

Wasn't sure I'd like this, but I thought I'd give it a go. Turns out, it's brilliant. Compellingly told across two time periods and beautifully shot in black and white.

Part 6 of 6. Series never lowers in quality, though unfortunately despite six movies this didn't present a definite ending. It's a really fun finale though, feeling much more on the verge of just going all out batshit insane for the hell of it. It also added some fantasy elements which weren't present before, in line with that more wild abandon.

Now THAT is one hell of a fucking movie! I can't believe I'd never seen it before.

And this was like watching a live stream of someone playing No Man's Sky in an empty world...

Part 4 of 6. Still excellent. Not as serious as some samurai movies.

A low budget horror pisstake. Has brilliantly funny moments. Unfortunately, the young heroine is an unlikeable brat.
