That's a great movie!

Watched this last night:

The game sequences are still amazing, but the story holding them together is completely laughable now. Well... it probably was in 1975 as well!Smile

I'm surprised by how little I remembered of this movie, considering it was only about 14 months since I first saw it. Felt like watching it for the first time again, for the most part.

Second viewing, this time on the Arrow Video blu-ray with restoration work done. Looked fantastic.

A rather short but solid noir/psych thriller.

Seen this one before but it was even better the second time around.

Another great noir movie.

Kubrick's first feature film. And it's crap. Apparently he thought so as well and legend has it he tried to have all copies destroyed. Man, I wish he'd succeeded because then I wouldn't have wasted an hour (that's only about how long it is) on this.

This is an exceptional noir that could have been top tier but I felt like there was potential for this to get even more twisted and dark than it was. I guess the production code of the day held them back from taking the ideas here too far. Still it's a great movie and so far easily the best of the bunch of noir movies I got on Arrow Video's recent sale.

Great action sequences, especially the fight scenes, but thin on plot. It's basically a rotation of 'capture guy, lose guy, find guy again, lose guy again', and so forth.

The saddest from the trilogy (there is a fourth film, I haven't see it yet). Good martial arts flick!

Start of a partial re-run through Dario Argento's work. Mainly the ones I have on blu-ray but probably also a couple of others providing they haven't been removed from Prime.

Difference with this one this time around is that before I saw this in English since that's what the disc defaulted to. This time I watched it in Italian.

Not on Prime (even to buy) or Netflix here but to be fair these services tend to suck for subtitled stuff that isn't original content or European.

My friend and I watched it on some streaming site that had subtitles (Don't know how legal it was though). Sucks that there's no English subtitle DVD release, would've liked to own it myself. Is it on any definitely legal streaming services?

Sounds promising then though I had a look and unfortunately it doesn't look like it's ever been given a UK release. The only DVDs on Amazon are Spanish and German releases which do not have English subs.

A lot of humor comes in the form of exaggerated expressions and ridiculous scenarios. There's more situational and over the top comedy than wordplay or spoken jokes.

Never heard of it but I'll certainly keep an eye out. Love a bit of black comedy. Don't always find that comedy translates well with subtitles though.

I don't know what your idea of "newer" would be, but Postman Blues is an excellent Japanese black comedy from the late 90's. I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it yet.

Not only that, but the pinnacle of film in general. North by Northwest is the only film I've seen that has even come close to matching this film's greatness, but even that is second to Yojimbo. I think this is the only movie that I've watched more than twice, it's honestly perfect in my eyes.

Does your Dad not like reading subtitles?

Subtitles aren't the issue, he actually likes to have them up on anything. But he does seem generally disinterested in anything I suggest to him out of Asian cinema. He only tried this one because it's what Fistful was ripped off from. It's a shame because there's some real gems I've seen out of Japan and South Korea (don't know much about other Asian cinema - yet). It's not a race thing, he'll watch a documentary about those countries and their culture and find it interesting, but he does seem to find the Asian languages grating.

Each to their own I guess. I might be able to convert him with a newer Japanese movie because he doesn't tend to enjoy older movies anyway (despite growing up with a lot of them when they were first released to cinemas), but my selection of those is rather thin once I discount the anime, samurai, and horror/sci-fi stuff.
