I've given samples by this band a listen, and am wondering if they're acceptable for inclusion (the label categorizes their music as melodic metal): Allen/Olzon: |

Hi Kim, long time no see.
It's possible that this could be added under MR guidelines regardless of sound, but if it could be placed in Hard Rock or even Heavy Metal it should be there by precedence. However we'd need the full album available in order to evaluate that and it doesn't drop until March. I can't imagine that this would not be on the site in some form, but for now we'll have to put it on the back burner.

I have access to the album, but can't share it or any info (other than what the label has already made public) on it due to embargo from the label. In my opinion, it's relevant, but I guess it should be up to the HR team to decide.

I have access to it, as well. My ears are feeling sore at the moment, though, but hopefully next week sometime I can give it a listen, and then I can let you know if I think it belong. Honestly, though, based on the single and on previous Frontiers records collaborative projects, I'm almost 100% sure it should be here.

Yes I also find the notion that a Russell Allen project would be completely ineligible (haven't listened to those samples yet by the way). Olzon? Well we booted her solo page a little while ago...

Yeah, her solo work is more pop oriented, from what I've heard. This should be melodic metal/hard rock, though, since that's what Frontiers Records specializes in, and I believe it's written by the same person who handled the first three Allen/Lande albums.
Listening to the samples now, and this for sure qualifies for either heavy metal (melodic metal) or hard rock.

Well the one song on Spotify is certainly (melodic) heavy metal. If the whole album is that vein (or well, half is good enough) then I'm fine if this is added to Heavy whenever.

Just checked my promo, and it actually does have an indefinite information embargo on it (I honestly don't remember ever getting anything like that from labels before, they usually just tell you not to share the album with anyone) so we probably shouldn't add this to the site yet, just to avoid any potential problems with the label. Based on the samples, though, I'd say it definitely belongs here.
I'd be scared to even try reviewing it, though, based on that embargo, considering how detailed my reviews tend to be. Edited by DippoMagoo - 15 Feb 2020 at 12:27pm |

There's enough public information on their own store to add it: https://www.frontiers.shop/new-releases/999/allen/olzon-worlds-apart-cd-jewelcase

Bump. No one ever added this and it's been out for over a month now.
If it feels right to anyone who has heard it RYM's crowd declared it symphonic metal.

I only listened to that track from before. That was not symphonic metal to my ears.

isn't power metal a choice? Still better than hard rock.

So we now have like four suggestions for placement? Blimey.
Let me listen to it.

I don't have time to finish this before dinner, but my impression with three tracks to go is Heavy Metal. There are symphonic parts here but it's often kind of like a symphonic metal lite and doesn't really belong on the same page as actual symphonic metal acts. It's definitely not Power Metal or Hard Rock.

Metalstorm classify them as both symphonic metal and power metal.

That's Metalstorm's problem.

wow, quick and rude answer... I actually agree, having listened to a couple of songs. Are there symphonic elements? Yes, there are. So why not symphonic metal? They are too melodic and cheesy for heavy metal... |

That was you misunderstanding humour, not rudeness.
Allen/Olzon is now added, so this thread will be closed per site policy. First I will address your question though.
You've actually answered this yourself well enough. The key word is elements. Lots of albums have elements of a genre but aren't placed in that genre. Elements aren't enough. I'd want symphonic elements to be dominant across at least most of the tracks to place this in Symphonic on MMA and they are not. That title track linked above for example is obviously not symphonic metal and it's not the only one like that on the release. Even on the tracks where they are there they really feel like the main focus. And as for power metal, well there's even less elements of that than symphonic, so that's even more out as a valid placement. This isn't of course what we'd called traditional heavy metal. Not by a long shot even. But it is primarily a modernised take on the heavy metal principle (you'll have noticed that at some point back we even had that sub renamed to just Heavy Metal rather than Traditional Heavy Metal - that was so we could more accurately capture modern acts like this one). The amount of melody and cheese does owe a dept to power metal, but it lacks power metal riffs, so can't be placed there. And in reference to the original suggested location for them, it's even more obvious that the riffs are at least metal riffs, not hard rock riffs. So even without a site policy to dictate where artists like this go (which there is, by the way) we're only left with one valid option anyway. |
