I came across Elegy by chance on Ebay as I was able to get some of their albums very cheap. They are a great band with a lot of potential, but sadly I don’t think it is reflected too well on ‘Lost’.
The best way I can think to describe this album, is that the band couldn’t decide whether they wanted to make a Progressive Metal album or a Power Metal album, and as a result they got stuck in the middle with an album that sounds like they’re trying too hard to be fancy and technical, while altogether the quality of the songs seems to have been forgotten about.
The riffs just really aren’t that exciting, the tinny production tends to take away any power behind the guitar solos, and the vocals are really annoyingly high. I usually love high vocals, but something about this guy is just irritating.
On a positive note, there are a few reasonably catchy chorus’s, and although they help me find a bit of stability in the song, it’s really not worth listening through a few minutes of awkward riffs for a chorus which lasts twenty seconds.
In conclusion, it’s not the worst CD I own, but I’d feel bad for anyone who’s first exposure to Elegy begins with this album.
