Doom Metal

MetalMusicArchives.com — the ultimate metal music online community, from the creators of progarchives.com

Doom metal is an extreme form of heavy metal music that typically uses slower tempos, low-tuned guitars and a much 'thicker' or 'heavier' sound than other metal genres. Both the music and the lyrics intend to evoke a sense of despair, dread, and impending doom. The genre is strongly influenced by the early work of Black Sabbath, who formed a prototype for doom metal with songs such as "Black Sabbath" and "Into the Void". During the first half of the 1980s, a number of bands from England (Pagan Altar, Witchfinder General) and the United States (Pentagram, Saint Vitus, Trouble) defined doom metal as a distinct genre.

CATHEDRAL Supernatural Birth Machine

Cathedral play a little joke on the listener with the opening track, Cybertron 71/Eternal Countdown, which opens in a gothic-doom metal approach reminiscent of the gothic metal work of Anathema, My Dying Bride, or Paradise Lost - the three other major death/doom bands that emerged in the UK in the early 1990s - before the subsequent song, Urko's Conquest, bursts forth in Cathedral's trademark effusive and enthusiastic stoner metal style. Whilst I am glad that there were bands such as Cathedral who felt confident enough to work against the dominant aesthetic of their local scene, I feel that as far as stoner doom goes Cathedral's material just seems a bit light and tame compared to the likes of Electric Wizard and Sleep.

ANATHEMA Eternity

Of all the bands in the "Peaceville Three" of Anathema, My Dying Bride, and Paradise Lost - pioneers of both a death/doom hybrid sound and, later, gothic metal, Anathema are by far the group I enjoy the most. On Eternity they play an intriguing blend of doomy gothic metal with gothy indie rock which puts me in mind of The Chameleons - in particular, Vincent Cavanaugh's lead vocals put me in mind of the vocals of Mark Burgess of Chameleons fame, and both bands tend towards a similar "wall of guitars" sound. I think the reason I like Anathema more than the other two boils down to them showing real taste and discernment when it comes to the alternative rock and gothic rock influences they weave into their music; Eternity is a good case in point.

ELECTRIC WIZARD Come My Fanatics...

Electric Wizard's sound evolved rapidly between their debut and the magnificent Come My Fanatics, which unleashes some of the heaviest doom metal ever recorded. Aside from Ivixor B/Phase Inducer, which features a mingling of electronic drone metal and Pink Floyd space rock, the order of the day is massive, chunky fuzzed-out riffs that come down on the listener's head like a sledgehammer. Standout track for me has to be Wizard In Black, in which Jus Oborn's vocals turn into a crazed megalomaniac rant as the fuzzed-out guitars and spooky sound effects swirl around him. A classic of 1990s doom metal and one of the heaviest doom metal albums ever.

ORANGE GOBLIN A Eulogy for the Damned

Acid trial...

Genre: 70s hard rock inspired metal

The British stoners in Orange Goblin have been active since the mid nineties and are one of the bigger act on the British so-called stoner-doom scene.

To be honest, I do not think that "A Eulogy for the Damned" is neither very stoned nor very doom-laden - the tracks are simply to uptempo to be stoner-friendly, and there is too much groove for the music to be able to create a doomsday mood.

That being said, "A Eulogy for the Damned" is not a bad album because it is not. Orange Goblin are in fact extremely good at coming up with groovy riffs, some of which even rival some of Led Zeppelin's and Black Sabbath's groovy riffage. Although I do not think it is a specially stoned album, it's easy to hear that Orange Goblin find inspiration in the hard rock of the 70s, which not only is reflected in the groovy riffs, but also in the underlying drive of many of the tunes on the album, the bluesy lead guitars, and the generally rocked-up atmosphere that permeates the entire record. And, although I do not think that this is a very doom-laden affair, there is a generally dark atmosphere to be felt and some heavy passages, but few of them really reach the slow doom metal tempo.

In any case - whether you think it's stoner-doom or not - "A Eulogy for the Damned" is a very good groovy, '70s rock inspired album (albeit with a very modern sound), which should appeal to fans of sludge metal and 70s hard rock and classic heavy metal.

SOLITUDE AETURNUS Downfall

Album · 1996 · Doom Metal

Warthur
The fourth Solitude Aeturnus album is an absolutely fantastic listen from a band who sound so much more confidence and self-assured here than on their first two albums. Aside from Deathwish - a cover of a classic-era Christian Death song which is very true to the rough, dirty, punkish original - the name of the game here is depressive doom metal inspired by Sabbath and Candlemass, with powerful vocals verging on the operatic by the magnificent Robert Lowe. So, not a radical departure from the band's usual formula - just an exceptionally skilled application of it which any doom metal fans will be well-advised to give a listen to.
