MINISTRY picture
Ministry popularized industrial-metal by injecting large doses of punky, over-the-top aggression and roaring heavy metal guitar riffs that helped their music find favor with metal and alternative audiences outside of industrial's cult fan base. That's not to say Ministry had a commercial or generally accessible sound: they were unremittingly intense, abrasive, pounding, and repetitive, and not always guitar-oriented (samples, synthesizers, and tape effects were a primary focus just as often as guitars and distorted vocals). However, both live and in the studio, they achieved a huge, crushing sound that put most of their contemporaries in aggressive musical genres to shame; plus, founder and frontman Al Jourgensen gave the group a greater aura of style and theater than other industrial bands, who seemed rather faceless when compared with Jourgensen's leather-clad cowboy/biker look and the edgy shock tactics of such videos as N.W.O., Jesus Built My Hotrod and Just One Fix. MINISTRY Filth Pig

A string of fantastic albums preceded what is likely to be Ministry's least experimental yet their most brash release they've ever put out- 1996's Filth Pig.

Up to this point, Ministry's music had been extremely eclectic, installing them permanently as one of the greatest industrial metal acts to ever be. Psalm 69 marked their entry into the 1990's, as well as the third album to achieve fantastic reception and hailed as fantastic upon it's release. Four years later however Filth Pig changed that landscape as Ministry opted for a much more caustic and barbaric version of themselves- one that skipped the pleasantries of unusual influences and time signatures and skipped straight to the meal. This meant much more focus on down-tuned guitars and a newfound (and rather perplexing) sludge metal synthesis. This means that much of the "industrial" sound that made Ministry unique was replaced with a much more by-the-numbers heavy metal approach, replete with pounding drum hooks, throbbing guitar riffs- the whole shebang. But such a drastic change is hard to actually accomplish with a straight face...and it seemed that not even the great Ministry could manage the feat.

When it comes down to it, Filth Pig lacks the substance it's predecessors. The track 'Lava', while being a guilty pleasure song with it's wavering distortion and Al Jourgensen's hissing vocal backdrop, is a perfect example of how fleeting the experience this album brings is, as it follows practically the same structure as most of the other songs like 'Crumbs' and 'Useless'. To contrast, The Mind is a Terrible Thing To Taste had a tracklist that constantly changed from song to song, each one having a unique vibe. Filth Pig's songs seem to just bleed into eachother boringly, to the point where it sometimes becomes hard to tell between one and another. The sludgy hooks and beefy atmosphere seems more often than not bloated and overblown and are not nearly enough to keep the album afloat. The overall result is a group of brooding tunes that leave little-to-no lasting impact with their grandiose potential, but ultimately no extra spice to get them kicking like classic Ministry tunes.

In 1992, Ministry made their ultimate breakthrough album with Psalm 69. While the band delivered some of the earliest examples of industrial metal back in the late 80's, Psalm 69 cemented itself as THE essential industrial metal album. The album blended the gritty atmosphere of the aforementioned genre with the speed and aggression of thrash metal, resulting in an instant classic in my book.

Fast-forward four years later, the band dropped Filth Pig. Filth Pig takes quite a different approach to the thrash-oriented industrial metal sound of the previous two albums. This album rather goes in the sludgy direction of fellow industrial metal pioneers Godflesh. Just take a listen to the groovy dirge of "Lava" and you'll see what I mean. Al Jourgensen's vocals are even more raspy this time around, his stark vocals contrast well with the grit of the music. "Crumbs" follows in the same mid-paced sludgy direction, with a bit more crashing percussion and dissonance. Paul Barker gets a short but neat little deep bassline in the middle of the song, which contrasts well with the almost black metal-dissonance that immediately follows.

The crushing "Dead Guy" may very well be my favorite on the album. Jourgensen's vocal attack on this track just bursts with attitude. The crunching bass/guitar interplay that opens up the track is absolutely killer. The following track, "Game Show" is a lot more misanthropic with downwards chromatic guitar licks and an atmosphere that expresses a strong sense of doom. Granted, most of the album does have a very stark gloomy atmosphere.

While not quite in the same league as The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste or Psalm 69, Filth Pig is a great album that showed the band trying something a bit different. The album title certainly fits, as I can't think of much else that fits the definition of filthy industrial metal quite like this one. Hope you found this review helpful, feel free to comment!

Ministry-Psalm 69

'Psalm 69' is the fifth studio album by industrial metal band Ministry. Every sub-genre of metal usually has a defining 'classic' of the genre. While for thrash it may be 'Master of Puppets', or for death it may be 'Symbolic', whatever genre it may be, there usually is a definitive album. For industrial, most fans agree that Ministry's 'Psalm 69' is a perfect contender for a definitive classic of industrial metal.

The previous album 'The Mind', showed Ministry at one of their most varied moments featuring aggressive tracks like 'Thieves' and dark brooding songs like 'Cannibal Song'. 'Psalm 69' takes the aggressiveness of 'The Mind' and amps it up with even more crushing riffs and barrages of mechanical drums. The album opens up with one of Ministry's most well-known songs, 'N.W.O.' with it's strong political lyrics, pounding drums, crushing guitar, and Al Jourgensen's raspy vocals. This album has no shortage of Ministry classics, with the thrashing 'Just One Fix', 'N.W.O.', and one of my personal favorites 'Hero'. Also featured is the humorous and catchy 'Jesus Built My Hotrod'. This song really captures the weirdness of some industrial metal bands, it doesn't get much better then a guy loving his car with passages like 'Ding dang a dong bong bing bong'. These lyrics wouldn't be too out of place on a Primus album.

It is true that 'The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste' has more variety, but 'Psalm 69' has something 'The Mind' didn't and that is guitar solos. Previously guitar solos weren't featured in industrial metal much, however Ministry really makes the guitar solos feel right at home on this album. The guitar solo on 'N.W.O.' is especially awesome, grinding perfectly along with the mechanical atmosphere. Speaking of grinding, one of my favorite songs is the title track which goes from haunting choir to grinding and thrashing riffs.

Overall, this album is a masterpiece beginning to end. Like I said, if there is one industrial metal album that everyone should have in their collection it should probably be this one. This album and 'The Mind' really show Ministry and industrial metal at it's very best. Hope you found this review helpful.

Ministry-The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste

'The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste' is the fourth studio album by industrial metal band Ministry. If I had to choose one industrial metal album that everyone should have in their collection, it would either be this true masterpiece of an album or the next release. From the brutal 'Thieves' to the surreal dreamy finale 'Dream Song', this album has it all.

Starting the album off, we have the aggressive guitar shreds of 'Thieves'. Soon the drum machines and mechanical sounds kick in and give the song a great beat. Jourgensen's vocals sound even rawer and aggressive then the last album. Unlike the previous album, there are a lot of thrash elements on this release such as the thrashing guitar and pounding drums of 'Thieves'. I just love the contrast in this between the more mechanical industrial parts and thrashing passages. My favorite song on the album has to be the second track 'Burning Inside'. This song is a perfect example of how industrial thrash should be. Jourgensen's muffled vocals combined with the shredding guitar and pounding drum machines makes this perfect. Something I especially love is the fast bass grooves that appear after the thrash guitar.

This album is highly varied, having a great balance of the heavier thrash tracks and more surreal menacing songs. One of my favorites of the latter is the meandering basslines and drum machines of 'Cannibal Song'. Jourgensen's vocals change for this song, having a higher, yet haunting, tone fitting perfectly with the menacing bass. The album ends on a very haunting note with the surreal 'Dream Song'. This song uses a combination of chamber music influences, haunting female vocals, menacing mechanical drums, and disturbing spoken word.

The lyrics are varied as well, covering a wide range of topics. The song 'Breathe' with the chanting of 'Breathe you fucker' is about the dangers of pollution and nuclear war. 'Burning Inside' is about drug addiction, and 'Thieves' and 'So What' are about political corruption and violence.

Overall, this is my favorite Ministry album along with the following release. It's one of my favorite industrial metal albums, maybe even my favorite. It has so much variety, both musically and lyrically, so I really never tire of it. Essential for any industrial metal collection.

MINISTRY The Land of Rape and Honey

Ministry-The Land of Rape and Honey

'The Land of Rape and Honey' is the third studio album by industrial metal band Ministry. Now at their third studio album, Ministry finally turns into how they're known today, a raw and brutal industrial metal band. There are still some elements from the previous album 'Twitch', on here but it's morphed into something grittier, darker, and distorted.

The album opens with one of Ministry's most well-known songs 'Stigmata', which shows the mechanical drumming of 'Twitch' combined with industrial heavy metal riffing and Jourgensen's aggressive vocals. The drum programming on this track is awesome, sometimes imitating double-bass. The next track 'The Missing' is probably my favorite on the album, with thrashing guitar and some great bass by Paul Barker. Speaking of bass, the song 'Deity' is another track with great bass grooves. Another one of my favorites is the short yet awesome 'I Prefer'. Jourgensen's vocals combine perfectly with the foot-tapping groove of the bass and electronics.

Some of the songs on the album have interesting use of sampling. One example is 'Hizbollah', which samples the song 'Kad Ataka' by Arabic singer Fairuz. The way the sampling is placed in with the menacing electronic soundscape makes quite the interesting listen. The Arabic musical style fits in with the way the song is put together. 'Golden Dawn' has more good use of sampling, sampling quotes from the 1971 movie 'The Devils'. The samples used in the songs on this album are placed very well, and match the atmospheres of the songs.

The album has a pretty good balance of the really metallic tracks, and the more straightforward industrial songs. Most of the songs do have a similar feel, but the guitar isn't always upfront. Overall, This is a great beginning for a new Ministry. This album would only lead to what is, in my opinion, their best album.
