Heathen Foray is a folk/viking/melodic death metal band from Graz, Styria, Austria formed in 2004. The band released their first demo, Forest, in 2007. The band went through several changes in their line-up at this stage, eventually settling on Robert Schroll (vocals), Jürgen Brüder (guitar), Bernd Zahn (guitar), Markus Engert (bass) and C. Michael Hofbauer (drums).
Markus Wildinger replaced Markus Engert on bass in 2008 which allowed Heathen Foray to play Pagafest 2008 along with the likes of Ensiferum, Moonsorrow, Korpiklaani, Tyr and Eluveitie. Initially a guest musicians, Wildinger was asked to join the band on the same day as the live performance.
In 2009 the band released their first full-length album, The Passage. After it was released, Franz Löchinger replaced C. Michael Hofbauer as the bands drummer, who left the band for private reasons. Löchinger, like Wildinger before him, was initially a session musician, but quickly became a full band member.
