CREAM picture
Cream were a 1960s British rock supergroup power trio consisting of bassist/singer Jack Bruce, drummer Ginger Baker, and guitarist/singer Eric Clapton. Their sound was characterised by a hybrid of blues rock, hard rock and psychedelic rock, combining the psychedelia-themed lyrics, Eric Clapton's blues guitar playing and vocals, Jack Bruce's voice and prominent bass playing and Ginger Baker's jazz-influenced drumming. The group's third album, Wheels of Fire, was the world's first platinum-selling double album. Cream are widely regarded as being the world's first successful supergroup. In their career, they sold over 15 million albums worldwide. Cream's music included songs based on traditional blues such as Crossroads and Spoonful, and modern blues such as Born Under a Bad Sign, as well as more eccentric songs such as Strange Brew, Tales of Brave Ulysses and Toad. Cream's biggest hits were I Feel Free (UK, number 11), Sunshine of Your Love (US, number 5), read more...

CREAM Wheels Of Fire

Wheels of Fire by Cream combines a studio disc containing one fairly high-quality track (White Room), some lukewarm filler and a few real clunkers (such as the interminable Pressed Rat and Warthog) with a live disc which captures the band's ability to jam away in their glorious psych-blues style more or less indefinitely. What's particularly notable is how the band are able to show off the technical excellence they could bring to bear in their jams without turning their compositions into a tedious noodle-fest; yes, the improvisations are long, but they never lose sight of the emotional context of the songs they appear in. I kind of think that by this point Cream had already lost the heavy blues-rock lead, with acts like Deep Purple, Iron Butterfly and Vanilla Fudge having already upped the ante to an extent which Cream failed to match, and the fuzzy production quality on the studio album is several notches down what you'd expect from the era, but if you have to Cream, this is as good a Cream as any.

This is what happens when you take the blues and you immerse it in acid under an atmosphere of weed smoke for a month. With psychedelia and blues in perfect balance - said balance embodied perfectly by the way opening track Strange Brew drifts off in a tie-dyed haze to be replaced by the grumbling blues riffs of Sunshine of Your Love - the album captures the spirit of its era in terms of its cover art and influences, but fails to provide equally exciting, colourful and diverse compositions. The closing goof-off Mother's Lament tries the patience a little, but how many will reach it when the preceding songs are such a turgid collection of drab dirges? As good as Sunshine of Your Love is, the album lacks the variety necessary to stop listening to it from becoming a chore.

CREAM had only been together about three years but they released 4 albums and sold millions of records. Yes they were a very influencial band but unfortunately Baker and Bruce hated each other and all of the in-fighting led to the breakup. This was their final album and like "Wheels Of Fire" we get one side of live tracks and one side studio songs. "I'm So Glad" is my favourite of the live songs but "Poiltician" is a pretty close second. The highlight though without a doubt is the studio track called "Badge". George Harrison and Eric Clapton composed it and Harrison even guests on it playing rhythm guitar. By the way he goes by the name L'Angelo Misterioso in the credits. The other studio tracks are okay and i'm surprised how much the chorus on "What A Bringdown" reminds me of JETHRO TULL. So a pretty good record but in my opinion it's not as good as "Wheels Of Fire" which was done in the same style.

Despite the fact that this recording has my favourite CREAM song in "White Room" and a second disc with some excellent live material i feel that "Disreali Gears" is their high water mark. You really need both though as these two recordings cover their best stuff. This was released in 1968 and the second disc was recorded live at the Fillmore. So yes we get the usual heavy Bluesy styled music with that Psychedelic flavour. As i mentioned the lead off track is my favourite. Just love the guitar in this bugger. It's tough to pick a top three other than the opening track because the studio part of this recording is pretty consistant. I will include "Politician" in my top three though with "As You Said", "Those Were The Days" and "Deserted Cities Of The Heart" battling it out for that third spot. The live section starts off amazingly well with Robert Johnson's "Crossroads" which is too short. "Spoonful" is close to 17 minutes and they seem to improvise a lot on this Willie Dixon cover. "Traintime" is okay with lots of harmonica while "Toad" is all about the impressive drum work of Ginger Baker. A solid 4 stars.

Brilliant milestone album from legendary masters of psychedelic fusion. Every song sizzles with vitality and this features some of their most infamous legendary songs such as Sunshine of Your Love and Strange Brew. Tales of Brave Ulysses is mind bending with Clapton's God like descending wah-wah guitar and his riffs on this album changed the face of rock indefinitely.

Jack Bruce's bass is a machine of power keeping it all together and the unsurpassed drums of Ginger Baker are phenomenal. This is legendary in the annals of rock; a milestone of the genius of Cream. Listen now and allow your mind to be hypnotised by the sounds of 1967.
