29 Needles-The Holy Misconception

'The Holy Misconception' is the second EP and final release by alternative metal/industrial metal band 29 Needles. Before breaking up early this year, 29 Needles went out with this EP as a final release.

While primarily an alternative metal and industrial metal band, 29 Needles takes a lot of influence from hardcore and metalcore. The guitar riffing in the opening title track has that industrial crunch to it, while the vocals are very reminiscent of metalcore bands like A Day to Remember. There are actually two vocalists, one using the hardcore-esque clean vocals while the other has the rawer vocals and growls. The industrial elements mostly appear as atmospheric, with the keyboards playing in the back. The way they incorporate industrial elements reminds me of metalcore band Motionless in White, with the way that the keyboards and programming acts as a background instrument. The title track is where the industrial elements are heard most. Speaking of the title track, I really like the lyrics which are relating to religious conspiracy.

While all three tracks are in the same style, they each have their own feel. The title track is the more atmospheric track, with crunching guitar and atmospheric keyboards. The second song 'The Collapse (An Unseen Ending)' is more along the lines of traditional metalcore, with pounding guitar and drums, and constant switching between death growls, raw vocals, and clean vocals. The last song 'Blood Oath' is probably my favorite from this EP, beginning with some very beautiful guitar work before the first death growls come in. Another thing I love about this song is the combination of more meandering passages and the crushing metalcore parts.

Overall, it's a shame these guys broke up early this year. This EP shows some strong alternative metal with industrial and metalcore tendencies, and I highly recommend this to any fans of industrial/alternative metal, metalcore, and especially fans of Motionless in White. Hope you found this review helpful.
