Morbid Angel were trimmed down to a trio lineup for this one, but you'd hardly know it given the furious and complex guitar playing showcased by Trey Azagthoth this time around. Refining and perfecting the approaches of the two previous albums, Covenant features weirder guitar solos that can be counted on to completely turn a song inside out once they're unleashed, more thunderous and brutal drums rhythms which keep up a furious pace throughout the album, and even more demented vocals, taking all the ingredients that made the previous two albums so intriguing and cranking them up to 11. This was the first Morbid Angel I ever really got into, and it helped my appreciation of the preceding works greatly; I'd suggest anyone new to the band begin their explorations here.
