Absu's short but sweet debut album finds the band mimicing the musical approach of harsh, lo-fi Norwegian black metal artists without really putting any sort of new, innovative or individual spin on the genre. Slightly overlong and spooky intro track? Check. Drums that at point sound like piles of cardboard boxes? Check. Bestial vocal style? Check, but it sounds rather affected and insincere. I understand things get a little bit more interesting on later albums, but the only sign of the promised black-thrash-death mashup on here is that the vocals tend to resemble a death metal grunt more than a black metal scream. Competent but forgettable.
