"Stoned" is the 2nd full-length studio album by US stoner/doom metal act Acid Witch. The album was released in January 2011 by Hells Headbangers Records. It´s been 3 years since the release of "Witchtanic Hellucination (2008)". An album that was released by Razorback Recordings. A match made in heaven if I ever heard of one. The filthy stoner doom/death of the debut album perfectly matches the old school extreme metal profile of Razorback Recordings.
...the same can certainly be said about the music on "Stoned" and the marriage with new label Hells Headbangers Records, which like Razorback Recordings, is also dedicated to old school extreme metal. The music is still deeply rooted in 70s/early 80s doom metal but with a psychadelic twist and growling vocals. The swirling psychadelic synths of the debut are toned down a bit here to give room for more organ. "Stoned" features quite a few horror/witch movie samples which go well with the lyrical content and the general image of the band. I guess song-titles like "Satanic Faith", "Sabbath of the Undead" and especially "Metal Movie Marijuana Massacre Meltdown" tell more than words.
The organic nature of the music and the sound production combined with memorable songwriting and a well playing band, make "Stoned" quite an enjoyable listen. I think I liked the debut sligthly better, but "Stoned" still deserves a respectable 3.5 star rating.
