GRAVEYARD Hisingen Blues

"Hisingen Blues" is the 2nd full-length studio album by Swedish hard/heavy rock act Graveyard. The album was released through Nuclear Blast Records in March 2011.

The music on "Hisingen Blues" is hard/heavy rock with deep roots in late sixties/early seventies hard rock. I´d especially mention Led Zeppelin as an inspiration. The riffs are hard rocking and blues based, the rythm section is organic and lead vocalist/guitarist Joakim Nilsson has a raw vocal delivery somewhere between Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audioslave) and Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin). The album features an organic sound production and what sounds like an analogue recording to me and that´s greatly enjoyable and suits the music well. While there are certainly raw and hard rocking moments on the album like the energetic opener "Ain’t Fit To Live Here" and "RSS", the band also take the tempo down and display how dynamic they can be too. A track like "Uncomfortably Numb" is a good example of this.

"Hisingen Blues" is a great release and a recommended purchase for fans of hard rocking heavy rock. The music is undeniably retro in every way possible, so don´t expect to hear anything here that you haven´t heard before. However what you can expect is to be blown away be the sincerity of the affair and the powerful delivery of the music and that certainly counts as plusses in my book too. A 3.5 - 4 star (75%) rating is deserved.

AC/DC Fly on the Wall

Album · 1985 · Traditional heavy metal

"Fly on the Wall" is the 10th full-length studio album by Australian hard/heavy rock act AC/DC. The album was released through Atlantic Records in June 1985. Like the case had been with "Flick of the Switch (1983)", "Fly on the Wall" is a self-produced affair. The two Young brothers had a desire to bring out the rawness of their early material as opposed to the more polished and pop-oriented sound productions of many contemporary hard rock and metal albums. A significant lineup change had taken place as original drummer Phil Rudd, who had been playing on all AC/DC albums since the band´s debut, left the band before the recording of "Fly on the Wall". His place is taken by Simon Wright who plays the drums on the album.

Four albums into the Brian Johnson led AC/DC era and the music on "Fly on the Wall" still sounds unmistakably like AC/DC. They have a signature sound and very seldom have they deviated much from that core sound. A heavy rocking rythm section, the raw bluesy hard rock riffing from Angus- and Malcolm Young (and some delicious guitar solos by Angus) and of course Brian Johnson´s impressive rusty wail. Allthough there are few standout tracks on the album, the title track, "Shake Your Foundations" and the relatively fast-paced "Playing With Girls" are some of the highlights. The latter mentioned sounds a bit like a raw version of something Guns´n´Roses would succeed with just a few years later.

While the album "only" sold about 1 million copies upon it´s release, which was considered a disappointment at the time, and generally received bad reviews, "Fly on the Wall" really isn´t that different from most other AC/DC releases. It might lack those really standout tracks that are featured on some of the group´s releases, but the reason for the relatively low sales, especially compared to the previous couple of albums, was probably more due to the musical climate at the time (the rise and commercial success of glam in particular), than because of the quality of the release. We´re not talking one of the best AC/DC albums I agree with that, but even one of the band´s less standout albums, is still a quality release deserving a 3 - 3.5 star (65%) rating.

MEMENTO WALTZ Antithesis of Time

EP · 2010 · Progressive Metal

"Antithesis of Time" is an EP release by Italian progressive metal act Memento Waltz. The EP is a self-released affair, released in October 2010. While Memento Waltz have yet to release a debut full-length studio album (one is according to the band in the making as we speak though), the band are not new to the scene, having existed since 1994.

...and it´s audible from the get go, that Memento Waltz are seasoned musicians. They play a technical style of progressive metal not far from the sound of acts like Spiral Architect and Twisted Into Form, and they play that style to perfection. We´re talking musicianship on an extremely high level. Fusion influenced drumming, odd time signatures and a varied and skillfully executed vocal style are some of the ingredients on "Antithesis of Time". Lead vocalist Marco Piu is a versatile vocalist and masters quite a few different vocal styles, sometimes sounding slightly like Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) or Warrel Dane (Sancturary, Nevermore) but also occasionally adding more extreme vocal styles into the mix.

The five tracks on the 30:54 minutes long EP takes us through a technical/progressive journey with a twisted nightmarish atmosphere. For a progressive metal act, Memento Waltz are definitely on the darker side of the fence along with acts like Watchtower, Psychotic Waltz and Zero Hour.

Considering the fact that the EP is self-produced in the band´s own studio, the sound production is very professional and well sounding.

"Antithesis of Time" display a band in great form. The music is not only performed with great skill, but the tracks are structurally challenging and quite demanding, which should be a treat to fans of the more technical part of the progressive metal genre. I´m quite impressed and a 3.5 - 4 star (75%) rating is deserved. Now give us that debut album!

MOLOKEN Rural

Album · 2011 · Sludge/Post-metal

"Rural" is the 2nd full-length studio album by Swedish Atmospheric Sludge Metal/Post-Hardcore act Moloken. The album was released through Discouraged Records in November 2011. Moloken hail from the small city of Holmsund, which serves as a port for Umeå (the city that spawned Meshuggah). holmsund/Umeå are situated in the northern part of Sweden.

...I guess the geography lesson is meant to portray why Moloken´s music is so dark and oppressive. There´s just something unique about those people coming from the northern part of Scandinavia. A bleak melancholic mood that Moloken successfully transfer to their music. Moloken play a blend of atmospheric sludge and post metal/hardcore. Acts like Neurosis and especially fellow Swedes Breach come to mind. The vocals are harsh and shouting but with an additional howling tone that reminds me slightly of how Luc Lemay sounded on "Obscura (1998)" by Gorguts. This is of course not death metal but the vocals are pretty extreme (to my great enjoyment).

There are seven tracks on the 52:14 minutes long album. All high quality material. The tempo is slow- mid paced with good variation. The tracks are generally structually challenging and it´s no surprise that the 16:23 minutes long centerpiece of the album titled "Ulv" takes the prize as the most progressively structured track. While most of the album is dark, chaotic, twisted and aggressive, "Rural" closes with "Åland" which is a mellow and atmospheric post rock track. A good choice for variation, which also gives the listener time to reflect over what he/she has just listened to. The way a tracklist is build, is a crucial ingredient of any successful album release and "Rural" features a really nice flow. Add to that an organic and powerful sound production and there´s little here to complain about.

..."Rural" has actually impressed me a lot more than my initial listen suggested, and I´ve ended up really enjoying the album. it´s dark, chaotic, aggressive, challenging and upon repeated spins some original elements have also revealed themselves. A 4 star (80%) rating is fully deserved.

BEHEADED ZOMBIE Schastiye dlya vseh

Album · 2009 · Death Metal
Cover art Buy this album from MMA partners
"Schastiye dlya vseh" is the 3rd full-length studio album by Russian technical/progressive death metal act Beheaded Zombie. The album was released in October 2009 through BadMoodMan/Technical Sound.

The music on the album is death metal with twisted dissonant riffs and jazzy sections/lead parts. The music and the growling are generally quite brutal but the progressive edge keeps the material intriguing throughout. I´d say Beheaded Zombie are more influenced by the early nineties Norwegian death metal scene than they are by Atheist, Cynic, Pestilence and Death, who I guess could be called the usual suspects when talking technical/progressive death metal. Acts like Darkthrone and Cadaver come to mind but it´s actually the equally obscure Norwegian tech/progressive death metal act Diskord and their "Doomscapes (2007)" album that I hear most references to. The lyrics are in Russian but if that poses a problem to you nevermind as the growling vocals are pretty much unintelligible. I guess really brutal growling is actually an universal language.

The 32:11 minutes long album is over before you know it, but it does leave a lasting impression and I found myself greatly entertained. The album has a suiting organic sound production, the musicianship is excellent and the songwriting of a pretty high quality, so if you enjoy technical/progressive death metal with a raw old school twist I can highly recommend a purchase of "Schastiye dlya vseh". A 3.5 - 4 star (75%) rating is deserved.
