ANATHEMA Weather Systems

Album · 2012 · Doom Metal

Anathema are a British modern Progressive Rock band, who started their career as a Death-Doom band in the early nineties. Their 2012 album Weather Systems was my entry point to the band, and since its release I have constantly listened to it, over and over, absorbing more and more of its obvious entertainment factor and its hidden depths. It got me hooked on the band and started me off getting more of their albums.

The record starts off with the fantastic ‘Untouchable’ which is an incredibly powerful and interesting track that constantly builds up, its got brilliant evocative lyrics and an emotionally charged mixture of male and female vocals. This is followed by the bittersweet piano driven ‘Untouchable Prt 2.’ From then on the album goes through a range of different moods and atmospheres, from light to dark, happy to sad. There’s strings, spoken word sections, acoustic sounds, electronicy glitching and more, and its all topped off with deep intriguing lyrics and a crystal clear production job.

Highlights include the aforementioned Untouchables as well as the ‘Sunlight’ and ‘The Beginning And The End’ although to be fair there is absolutely no filler, the record is a strong journey from beginning to end. There are some naysayers to the album out there, most of whom are either caught out by an album they expected to be heavy but wasn’t, or are fans of the band’s early days and don’t like the new direction. I can see how very different this is to anything the band did at the start of their career, and if you came in expecting something that sounds like early My Dying Bride or Paradise Lost then it may be disappointing, as there is nothing in the way of Death or Doom on offer here at all, but this is an extremely enjoyable, masterfully crafted modern Progressive Rock album, full of interesting, inventive tracks that flows really well as an album and that just grows and grows with every listen.

If you are a fan of bands like Porcupine Tree, Riverside, Tool, Rishloo, Amplifier or even The Mars Volta, Coheed & Cambria or Dream Theater, you may at least want to check this album out. Overall; Since I first heard it, I’ve grown extremely fond of this record, its got some of my favourite ever songs on it and I highly, highly recommend it, if you think you might like it.

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY The Blessed Hellride

Album · 2003 · Traditional heavy metal
Cover art Buy this album from MMA partners
Black Label Society are an American Heavy Metal band featuring virtuoso guitarist Zack Wylde, who is famous for his work with Ozzy Osbourne. 2003’s The Blessed Hellride was their fourth full-length studio album. It has become one of the fan’s favourite Black Label Society releases, and features many tracks that none of the band’s live shows or compilations should be without.

Most of the album centers around a mixture of sounds that will be familiar to fans of Stoner Rock, traditional Heavy Metal and Hard Rock sounds, and the occasional tiniest hints of Southern Rock and Grunge. Its fun, meaty Heavy Metal for the noughties. The lyrics are mostly steeped in biker culture and alcohol, but there is a bit more scope to explore other areas in a few of the tracks.

That being said, its not a whole album of the one style track over and over, there is a certain touch of variety to be found here. The album’s Title Track, ‘The Blessed Hellride’ is an interesting slightly Southern tinged acoustic number. The single ‘Stillborn’ features guest vocals from Ozzy Osbourne and ‘Dead Meadow’ is a bit of a more somber, semi-ballad.

Highlights include the catchy ‘Suffering Overdue,’ the memorable single ‘Funeral Bell’ and the faster, squeal filled ‘Destruction Overdrive.’

Overall; The Blessed Hellride is a good record for Black Label Society fans, the songs are fairly distinctive and there’s a good mixture of heavier moments and variety.

CHILDREN OF BODOM Hate Crew Deathroll

Album · 2003 · Death Metal
Cover art Buy this album from MMA partners
Hate Crew Deathroll, from 2003, is the fourth full-length studio album by the Swedish Melodic Death Metal band Children Of Bodom. It was something of a breakthrough album for the band, and is generally regarded by a large section of the fanbase as one of their best albums. If you already like the band, then it is a must-have album. If you are a new fan, it’s a good place to start.

The sound of the record is a highly melodic, but extremely aggressively played, and mostly high-speed mixture of Power Metal sounding and Thrash Metal sounding riffs, with Death and Black Metal influenced vocals, and unconventional keyboard sounds. There is an absolute ton of virtuosic guitar solos, often dual or trading off against keyboard solos.

Luckily, not only does this record have the style absolutely nailed, but the songwriting is of a high standard too. Highlights include the furious opener ‘Needled 24/7,’ the memorable ‘Sixpounder,’ as well as the slower ‘Angel’s Don’t Kill’ and the Title-Track ‘Hate Crew Deathroll.’

Overall; Hate Crew Deathroll is a brilliant, well written and musically impressive Metal album in general, and if you like speedy double-kicks, virtuosic lead guitar work, Power Metal, Thrash Metal or any other bands that get labeled Melodic Death Metal, then this may definitely be of interest to you.

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY Hangover Music, Volume VI

Hangover Music Vol. VI, from 2004, is the fifth full-length studio album by the American Heavy Metal band Black Label Society. This is stylistically an atypical album by the band, in that for the most part it is essentially an acoustic album.

The record is a proper studio album that contains a set of new songs (as opposed to reworking existing Black Label Society songs for a sort of acoustic compilation or MTV Unplugged sort of release).

Some of the tracks are slow, emotional piano ballads, some of the tracks are acoustic guitar ballads, and some are semi-acoustic rock songs (a few of which even feature distorted electric guitar). One of the tracks is an all acoustic guitar solo, like the band usually stick on a studio album to break things up and one of the tracks is a cover of Procol Harum’s ‘Whiter Shade Of Pale.’

Newcomers may be skeptical of how well a band like Black Label Society, famous for guitar tricks and low pitched chugging riffs, could pull off an acoustic album, but in my opinion this is actually a very good release, and actually contains two or three of the very best songs that the band ever released.

Highlights include the opener ‘Crazy Or High?’ as well as the brilliantly emotional ‘Stepping Stone’ with its big doomy bells, and ‘House Of Doom’ which is one of the catchiest tracks in the band’s whole catalougue.

Overall; Hangover Music is a surprisingly enjoyable and accomplished effort, that may be atypical of the band’s usual output, but which is definitely worth checking out.

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY Order of the Black

Album · 2010 · Traditional heavy metal

Order Of The Black is the eighth full-length studio album by the American Heavy Metal band Black Label Society, the band featuring former Ozzy Osbourne virtuoso guitarist Zack Wylde.

Order Of The Black is seen as something of a return to form for certain fans of the band, in that after two albums that were perceived to have toned things down a little, and resided too much in only the mid and slow tempos, this record brings back a much heavier production job and more fast paced songs. Its also filled with more personality displaying guitar tricks and virtuosic solos.

It is certainly a very well written and masterfully crafted collection of songs in the Black Label Society style, it does everything that the band intend to do and it does it well, with a certain unquantifiable ‘umph.’

Standout tracks include the groovy opener ‘Crazy Horse,’ the memorable singles ‘Overlord’ and ‘Parade Of The Dead’ and the speedy and incredibly meaty ‘Godspeed Hellbound.’

All the usual Black Label Society features make an appearance on the record, there’s a few ballads, there’s a few mid tempo heavy numbers and there’s an acoustic guitar solo. If anything bad were to be said about the album beyond ‘the band have done this style before’ it would be that the album is perhaps a little overlong. Other than those two potential faults however, this is one of the better Black Label Society albums overall, and it contains a few genuine career highlights.

Overall; Order Of The Black is a strong Black Label Society album, with a satisfyingly heavy production job, a bit of variety and some of the best tracks the band have written in there during its long duration. As long as you aren’t absolutely sick of their style, or are bothered by its length, this will definitely be an enjoyable album and you should absolutely check it out.

I've only really checked out the new Clutch, Hatebreed, Coheed, Riverside, KSE and BMTH albums, all of which I liked... and I've got the new Megadeth and two Queensryche albums preordered.  Otherwise, I don't really know much from this year.I might check out Children Of Bodom, Amon Amarth, Deep Purple, Gama Bomb and Gamma Ray albums, I'm not sure yet.
