DEVIN TOWNSEND Terria

Album · 2001 · Progressive Metal

What an album! I first heard Terria about a year ago and didn't think much of it, but (thankfully) I decided to really listen to it. The album pulses with such high levels of beauty, anger, and peace that it's incredible it all works. But it does! The guitars switch between massively powerful and intimate effortlessly, creating an atmosphere that seems to say "there's a place for anger, but ultimately, the world is a place of wonder." Terria successfully transports the listener to this world of vastness that manages to still feel grounded. It's a dense, yet surprisingly accessible masterpiece. Rating: 10/10

HAKEN Aquarius

Album · 2010 · Progressive Metal

Haken's debut offers a blend of extremely proggy rock and metal. This isn't a progressive metal album in the typical sense; it's a blend of technical prog with that "tripping over itself" feel and some sections of metal with harsh vocals. The instrumentation is eclectic, as seen in the second track, Streams. The song switches from carefree prog featuring a xylophone, to middle-eastern strings, to a simple piano melody, and to death growls ushered in by ominous organs, then returning again to clean vocals with some strings before closing. The rest of the album is slower and more atmospheric, but is still excellent. Aquarius manages to entertain on many levels and create an album that is progressive in multiple ways. An incredibly strong debut album, it hints at great things to come from this band. Rating: 9/10

SAVIOUR MACHINE Behold the Mask

EP · 1999 · Gothic Metal

Well, this is exactly what it sounds like- a CD in the shape of a roughly-cut mask. Since the mask isn't round, that means the album won't play in many cd players.

Quote from the CD case: "Caution! Not suitable for disc-changers and car-CD-players. Improper use is left at owner's risk."

Yes that's right.

The only way to hear this album is to play it on a regular, single slot CD player- not a computer one, a disc-changing one, or a car one. You can, however, find all of these tracks on other Saviour Machine albums that are actually circular in shape. The track list is short because the album only holds information as far as a circle can be burned on it, which is recognizable by some CD players.

Recommended for a huge Saviour Machine fan with a sense of humor.

SAVIOUR MACHINE Legend, Part I

Album · 1997 · Gothic Metal

A dark, dense shadow marches along without falter. It's massive wall of sound can be overwhelming at first, but to the right listener, it is beautiful.

After you "get into" this style of music, you'll discover a masterpiece here. The mood is very grave, as the lyrics deal with the book of Revelations. Taking on the Eastern imagery, there are noticeable Eastern-sounding guitars built into the wall of sound which carries the album. There is very little riffing or soloing, and the album is fairly steady-paced and uniform with Clayton's searching vocals soaring over a web of instrumentation. The album is definitely meant to be listened to as a single piece, and each track flows into the next, with some spoken interludes and transitions.

Although it can take several listens to appreciate, Legend Part I is a masterpiece which leaves the listener anxious to continue the journey with the rest of the trilogy.

I recently finished all of Stanley Kubrick's films and watched the documentary Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures, which was excellent.  His films that I'd give 9 or 10 out of 10 are Paths of Glory, Spartacus, The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, Dr. Strangelove, and 2001 A Space Odyssey (his best IMHO), with Barry Lyndon, Full Metal Jacket, and Eyes Wide Shut following close behind.  The only ones I didn't think were that great were Lolita, Killer's Kiss, and The Killing.  It's amazing that such a wide range of brilliant films, some complete opposites of others, could all come from one guy.

Have you seen the Swedish original? Pretty sick and brutal too. I´ll probably take my wife to see the English version. She loved the Swedish version.
I don't like remakes. And the original film is awesome. With so many books waiting to be adapted (Dark Tower anyone?), why the yankees insist on remaking every sucessful film from another countries?
That's true actually. How about "Let the Right One In"? this Swedish movie obviously had to be remade by Hollywood because it received soo much attention.
I thought they both were excellent though.  The English one didn't feel like a "major" film, but I think the Swedish one is probably a little better. As for Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, I thought the English one was better than the Swedish one by a lot.

Yeah.  But Buckethead has played on over 200 albums, and of the few I've listened to, a couple are consistently metal. And wikipedia says:His music spans such diverse areas as progressive metal, funk, blues, jazz, bluegrass, ambient, and avant-garde music. And somehow Steve Vai is on here and PA but not him.  Oh well...
