NEKTAR DOOR TO THE FUTURE

Live album · 2005 · Hard Rock

Not an easy band to judge Nektar. Primarily their music is Space Rock with heavy atmospheres (due to sound) with symphonic elements. But this is good if you speak in today view. In 70's Nektar was another band that is partner in the birth of Heavy Metal also if in this case with a music that is 100% Space Rock and, for this motive, Nektar is a Prog Rock band.

This "Door To The Future" is a good live album, recorded in Beitigheim and Beilefeld during German Tour 1974. Sure the recordings are not perfect but sure the atmospheres are saved and great. In my vision Nektar is a band with great musicians and writers, so that the music is a pure experience of dream. But sure for a contemporary metalhed with few appeal. In truth Nektar was totally Heavy Metal for 70's standards as I wrote above. The music, in fact is not so distant fron Wishbone Ash, Judas Priest or other similar bands that plays Heavy Metal in 70's and for this fact precursors of NWoBHM. Is a strange sensation but true and sincere but Nektar is a great band both for Prog Rock and Heavy Metal but Nektar is not part of Proto Prog Metal genre. Not for this Nektar Music is not Proto Prog Metal.

This live album present great songs. I do not have a preferred song in this album. Due, this fact, to the great level of all song but also because it is difficult to choose one song that is better to another song. Probably any songs have a peak moment for me but sure not have a really bad moment or passage. Sure due to recordings this fact is in my mind but it is also true that this is the truth. The sound is dominated by giutar and keyboards (organ? synths?) and in this sense Nektar would be that if was born today would have much success among the followers of Classic Metal. The songs, then, sounds current and fresh.

IMHO, "Door To The Future" is not a perfect live album and it is not totally representative of Nektar music but it is a great album for atmosheres and magic. Sure if 70's music please you "Door To The Future" is a great album, for you.

DEEP PURPLE Shades of Deep Purple

Album · 1968 · Proto-Metal

"Shades Of Deep Purple" is the debut LP of Deep Purple, one of the inventors of Heavy Metal. But Shades Of Deep Purple is (and this in not only my opinion) a great example of Psychedelic Proto Prog malbum. In this album is present "Hush", a great Joe South cover, a hit in USA and DP evergreen. Also "Mandrake Root" is a DP evergreen and one of the best DP original tracks. But the rest of the album is not at the same level (But Beatles cover "Help" is good because very emotional).

In general this album is a typical album for 1968 with a good mix between Proto Prog and Psychedelic Rock but not representative og MkI.

NAZARETH Greathest Hits (2006)

Boxset / Compilation · 2006 · Hard Rock

Hmmm... I'm sincere, this compilation is only another budget compilation and nothing more. Do not try to understand what are Nazareth with this compilation. That have good songs ("Miss Misery", "Bad, Bad Boy", "Broken Down Angel", "Love Hurts", "Holy Roller", "1692 Glencoe Massacre" or "Morning Dew") and other inretesting songs, but that sounds too close to some Classic Rock way. Certainly if Hard Rock is your genre Nazareth is another great band for you. But this compilation present also some bad moments (live version of "This Flight Tonight", a bad version of "Ruby Tuesday", for me). So, because for me the evolution of bands as Cream are Nazareth, this compilation is not totally good, in my mind.

This is my idea of this compilation. But Nazareth remain one of my preferred Hard Rock bands.

SKID ROW Slave To The Grind

Sick, rotten and fucking! This is "Slave To The Grind" 2nd Skid Row album. A perfect album if you love Kiss and Metallica! An album with Blues in veins and Thrash Metal in mind with a great Speed Thrash Metal track "Slave To The Grind" and a great emotional power ballad "Wasted Time" (Error, in my opinion, put it as close track!). The band, already perfect on the first album, in this "Slave To The Grind" decides to become even more gear and more for this American (but already it was), so that "Slave To The Grind" becomes a timeless album! Van Halen, Ted Nugent or Kiss began a type of music that bands like Cinderella, Poison, Bon Jovi and Skid Row led to the top of success. "Slave To The Grind" is, after all, an album remarkable in blending Blues, Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, Punk, etc... in an explosive and romantic bomb. Willingly I listen to songs like "Quicksand Jesus" or "Wasted Time", good examples of power ballads (with Blues in vein), like "Slave To The Grind", a clear example of Speed Thrash Metal, without listening to stylistic differences, a sign of superior musicians and composers.

Trying to describe "Slave To The Grind" is not easy: follow'd better listen, analyze it, love it. Why, then, should not be classified albums like this!

GARY MOORE Back on the Streets: The Rock Collection

Boxset / Compilation · 2003 · Traditional heavy metal

Gary Moore has been one of my first listen, when I was a child. Song as "Don't Take Me For A Loser" or "Always Gonna Love You" was the best Metal song, for my Rock song conception when I was a child. Today remain in me the belief that they are still good songs. But Gary Moore was also other magical heavy metal song and magical Blues songs. But in 80's Gary Moore was a great Metal axeman. In this "Back On The Streets, The Rock Collection" These two songs are not included. But not for this fact I think that this compilation are not good. Because for me "Back On The Streets, The Rock Collection" is a good compilation if You do not know the Metal side of Gary Moore.

The first song is "Out In The Fields" with Phil Lynott at the vocals. This song is a pure Classic Rock/ Hard Rock song with all the ingredients of a pure hit, also if it is too close to a Thin Lizzy song. A good start song for all Classic Heavy Metal compilation and obviously great start song for this compilation. "Run For Cover" present a savago piano intro butI must say that it is one of the heaviest songs by Gary Moore, though very melodic. The sound of the guitar has a very compressed and distorted, in addition, the mix is all about explosive power that the writing of the song features. And then the chorus enters your brain (like the melody) and is imprinted forever! More bluesy is "All Messed Up," which is deliberately rougher and less bastard. But I like to do just that! "Shapes Of Things" is the cover of the Yardbirds hit. In this version this song remain similar to Jeff Beck Group version but with more power and technique, because with less Blues arrangement and with too Metal guitar sound (compressed and distorted guitar sound) and vocal interpretation. "Murder In The Sky" is a direct and powerful song and it must be said, also one of heavy metal songs by Gary Moore. Written to being a protest against the Soviet Union's shooting down of Korean Air Flight 007, "Murder In The Sky" is also an excellent song released from this motivation. "Cold Hearted" is a Slow Rock from "Corridors Of Power" but it is aged badly and today is only a Gary Moore song with a great guitar solo section. Vice versa "Rockin' Every Night" is a immortal Rock'n'roll song, without claims, but to recover the initial spirit of the Rock music. "Wishing Well" is the cover of the Free Hit. The live version from "Rockin Every Night- Live In Japan" is great too Heavy Metal as the studio version (also if this live version is more Heavy Metal for sound and interpretation). Remain a great version of a great and immortal song. "After The War" is a beautiful song, a little too POP for structure and use of instruments. However, "After The Wall" is an excellent example of 80's Hard Rock / Heavy Metal with (obviously) a great guiar solo. "Led Clones" (with Ozzy Osbourne) is a song that I can not swallow: Black Sabbath for structure and rhythm, Ozzy Osbourne for style andsound, Gary Moore for style guitar and Led Zeppelin in string instruments. A mix that can not digest. But the song is interesting. "Wild Frontier" is presented here in "After The War" 2002 live bonus track version. Great song, A great Irish Hard Rock Folk Rock song in Heavy Metal field, a great moment of music. "Back On The Steets" (here in "We Want Moore!" live version) is a perfect mix between Closseum II and Thin Lizzy and for this fact I classify this song as Fusion Heavy Metal.

In definitive vision "Back On The Streets, The Rock Collection" is a great compilation if you do not have nothing of 80's Hard Rock/ Heavy Metal production of Gary Moore. Vice versa this compilation does not present anything new.
