Welcome to the site!!
Well, a good crash course in Prog Metal would be of course to start with the 90s basics, beginning with Dream Theater, Queensryche, or Fate's Warning, and then branching off into the genres many subgenres. There are also countless "Dream Theater Clones" as well, i.e. bands that essentially replicate the Dream Theater sound. But, for branching from the "big three" you could move to Symphony X or Psychotic Waltz, or the Symphonic end of the genre with guys like Pagan's Mind or Anubis Gate, although those players came about later on. There is also the extreme side of prog metal, with the fantastic acts of Opeth, Cynic, Meshuggah, Athesist, and many more. On the more experimental side, prog metal finds some of its finest players, including the legend Devin Townsend, Toby Driver's numerous projects, most notably maudlin of the Well and Kayo Dot, the black metal bands Alcest, Negura Bunget, and Deathspell Omega, and so many more. There are countless bands that fall into these many little sub-styles of prog metal. My best recommendations would be Dream Theater, Opeth, Cynic, Symphony X, Vanden Plas, Between the Buried and Me, Matraz, Devin Townsend, Alcest, Haken, Scale the Summit, Panzerballett, Exivious, Liquid Tension Experiment, Animals as Leaders, and so many more.
