Part four of a study on bassists: TRASH METAL I chose three bassists, each having great skill with their instrument, and each being in a band that has a rather decent following. So, which of these bassists, from Metallica, Slayer, or Megadeth is your favorite? I tried to pick the "biggest three" thash metal acts. I chose Cliff Burton.

Oh boy, here we go!
Ellefson. Tom is adequate, which is by definition fine, but nothing much really. OK, I love Metallica (I need to say that so waves of fanboys wont kill me!) but I think Cliff is a bit over rated. Now he is good, but he's regarded as a metal god...and really I never heard anything that made think that. In fact youtube the "bass only" metallica videos. Honestly, his basslines pretty much mirror the guitar. Which is the job of a bass...and when he does shine it's pretty good stuff. But he was a musician and not virtuoso IMO so I don't see the love built around him, (I guess since he's a dead hero?) He was a good bassist. Ellefson is best of these three. |

I barely even like Metallica anymore, but you can't fuckin' argue with the awesomeness of Burton. Tom kinda sucks.

...but I can? All Cliff's basslines are just harmonized with the guitar (aka the foundation of a bassist) and I did say he was good I just never personally heard something that would make him a god. It's like the Dark Knight. Good movie without doubt, but while no one will admit it (or even realize maybe) it was over hyped because the main star died. Apply it to Cliff, except he was the movie and star.. RIP indeed Oh and as for Tom, can't say he sucks. Never did anything bad, he just was totally unspectacular in anyway. Not like bass was critical to slayer anyway (finger pick one note 100 times!) Its like saying a drummer "sucks" when really they're not bad just not playing anything good. Given those choices, Cliff with Ellefson a close second. Cliff got more room to shine the Junior did in Megadeth, although Ellefson may technically be the more complete player. Difficult to give Cliff an unbiased opinion, but Master of Puppets was one of those life changing albums for me, and Cliff's playing and composing has a lot to do with it.
Hard to really judge Araya's playing since he's often playing half speed or more minimal bass parts, but he gets the job done. Aside from their drummers, Slayer never had a big reputation for great musicianship anyways.

I would go for Burton, since I really like Metallica the most out of these three, but haven't really gotten into either Slayer or Megadeth
 , so no vote...

Cliff Burton.
True, in a lot of songs he doubles the guitar but that is surprisingly not that often. I would say his major qualities were that he had a lot of character in his playing, experimented with the sounds fruitfully (Damage Inc anyone?) and above all he was a supremely gifted songwriter. His awesomeness and myth status are well desrved imo. He was the major force behind Metallica's uber coolness in the 80s, the down-to-earth, street attitude, the open-mindedness in a genre that was dangerously flirting with outside-world isolation, both in music terms and scene mentality.

I went with Cliff Burton. I like Dave Ellefson's sound, though, which to me pretty much defines the Megadeth sound (I guess that's the same thing UMUR said). Tom Araya is cool, I think, but I am thinking more of him as a vocalist (I think his voice sounds awesome on the later albums - it sounds so harsh and angry).
