I think Ive heard of Arsis before. Not exactly my favorite style of death metal, but competent for sure.

These guys are from Virginia, yet they play Gothenburg melodeath better than the Gothenburg bands (in this album). WTF?

Ive been listening to the two demo tapes by Danish death metal act Caustic these last couple of days: http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/caustic.aspx?ac=caustic. Really cool doomy and slightly progressive death metal. Both the tracks from the two demos and their EP are available for free download here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Caustic/162762253785471?sk=app_2405167945Highly recommendable stuff IMO. I have the "Timid Reality" demo on cassette tape. Its probably one of the most interesting Danish death metal demos from those days.
Keeping in mind that this is a demo note the pretty stellar sound production. Also note the kind of jazzy drumming. Pretty unusual.

Following up on my comments on Fleshgod Apocalypse, the new album is pretty solid, providing you look at it from purely a symphonic death metal perspective. The really great parts of it are mostly coming from their classical side, rather than their metal side. On the death metal front Oracles is infinitely better. Will post my review today most probably.

Im not much of a Deicide fan these days, but back when the first two were released I was a very big fan. I still enjoy the first two albums on occassion. I actually saw Deicide on the tour supporting "Legion" in late 1992. It was one of my first extreme metal concerts.

Going through Deicide's discography now. Their best so far is their iconic Legion album.

I'm still only really discovering all the different aspects of death metal, but I am quite fond of symphonic DM I must say. Makes a nice change from the barrage of symphonic black metal groups. There are still very few groups I've found that play in this style though, just really Septicflesh, Hollenthon, Mayan (which isn't that symphonic despite its branding). Psypheria that I posted above is kinda symphonic, but that's more accurate as something like "progressive symphonic gothic death metal" ;)
And of course Fleshgod Apocalypse, though I gather from what I've read this symphonic death style is new for them.

Well Im not sure I agree about that, but we generally have quite a different taste in death metal, so I guess thats no surprise.

Upon finishing it I think it was good, but a little samey. I'll post a review after I've digested it for a few more listens.
World definitely needs more symphonic death metal bands though.

This one sounds pretty good so far, pretty intense, yet symphonic death metal. Think recent Septicflesh but more aggressive.

That's a good one. The Ultimate Incantation was decent, but De Profundis is where they truly begin to show their colors. Also, Bolt fucking Thrower |
