Celtic Frost, one of the most influential yet underappreciated bands in metal history, released albums that were very varied and different, ranging from the raw punk-black-thrash metal style of "Morbid Tales" and "Emperor's Return" over the avant-garde "To Mega Therion" and "Into the Pandemonium" and the traditional and glam-influenced "Cold Lake" and the melancholic mid-tempo thrash metal "Vanity/Nemesis" to the dark and doomy "Monotheist".

Which one do you like the best and what do you like about it, and how is it better than the other releases?

I must confess that this is one of those bands in the endless "to be checked" list (in my head), though I've heard bits and pieces, both from the old and new era. Kind of embarrassing coming from a dude responsible for the black metal section here, haha.

I've heard the two biggest classics from the 80s (at least to my knowledge), To Mega Therion and Into the Pandemonium that is, the latter only once I guess, and Monotheist. To Mega Therion has some good stuff but also some all too funny sections, mostly when Warrior brings out his falsetto. I still have to listen to it more to really say something about it, which is the case with Pandemonium as well. But monotheist is really really damn brilliant. Massively heavy, dark, atmospheric. I can't see liking the earlier ones as much, Monotheist is one of my metal favourites in fact.

I still haven't really listened to the Triptykon debut, it's on my to-do list.

I guess the lack of activity in this poll supports my claim that the Frost are an underappreciated band ;-)

Anyhow, my favorite for the time being is "Into the Pandemonium", but for many years "Vanity/Nemesis" was my preferred Celtic Frost release.

I've never got into Celtic Frost.  I'm only familiar with some of their songs, and that's mainly through other bands covering them.  I've seen their "Cherry Orchard" music video numerous times, but from what I understand, that's really no indication of what they were like as a whole.

No, that's from their "Cold Lake" era, which most people do not consider true Frost. I think "Cold Lake" is an okay album, though.

I think Tom Warrior himself is the harshest critic of that album, he seems to loathe it with burning passion.

I listened to Into the Pandemonium yesterday, and while I appreciate it for being very eclectic blend of different things, I doubt I'll ever really like it.

Yeah, and I guess one of the problems was that he was not really enthusiastic about doing that album and pretty much take over. As far as I know, he didn't want to do a Celtic Frost album at the time, but was pressed into it by the record label.

It took me years to be musically mature enough to be able to appreciate that album myself - I actually owned a copy way back which I swapped with a friend for "Kill 'Em All", a Sacred Reich album, and another CD which I can't remember (he was that eager to get his hands on that legendary metal album). Eventually, I bought another copy and started liking it more and more. Up until then "Vanity/Nemesis" was my favorite Frost album.

It's been a while since I heard Celtic Frost. But from what I remember, Morbid Tales was pretty good. It reminded me a bit of Venom, who I also like.
