I used to be a big fan of Nile several years ago,
but as I've gotten older and realized what makes music resonate with me
(Primarily anything that evokes a primal response, but good songwriting
is a key thing for me), most of their stuff bores me these days. At the
Gates of Sethu and What Should Not Be Unearthed had them going in a
direction I liked and are pretty good, but that's about it. As far as
tech death goes, there's no beating Atheist, perfect example of
fantastic songwriters not letting technical bravado get in the way of
great hooks.
and thanks
Wow.
For me Nile has only gotten better over the years. I love Atheist as
well but they use jazz as a tech hybrid while Nile uses Egyptian folk
from the past. Both are two of my fave bands of all time actually and
Nile's new album hits me exactly where i want to go! Added to that,
seeing them live last Sunday made me appreciate them even more. They are
highly progressive and unless you crave nerdy high octane angularities
then i can understand why they don't appeal to everyone. For me, primo!

^Yeah in my opinion Atheist are the kings of tech death! Such wonderful ear candy.

Skimmed through that album, I thought it was so boring. Sounded too much like their old stuff for my tastes. Nile had finally learned how to write hooks on At the Gates of Sethu (Why do people shit on that album?) then this didn't seem to have any. I heard someone left the band, don't know if that would've had an effect.
and people thought Big Beat died at the beginning of the new millennium. One of the best in the genre, has fucking hooks like no other. His new album is excellent too, but this album was just instant love as soon as I first heard it.
